Does this prove a common origin? Not yet. The hypothesis is plausible, but the available evidence is still incomplete and further research is needed. Post 5 The story of the Jagaru, or Dogo Sardo, remains one of the most fascinating puzzles in canine history.

Interestingly, modern genetic studies on the Fonnese appear to suggest a similar ancestry. Historical evidence and genetics may be pointing in the same direction.

In 1774, a Sardinian dog was described as the result of crossing greyhounds with large mastiffs. This combination would have produced a fast, powerful, and versatile working dog.

What if the Dogo Sardo (Sardinian Mastiff) and the Fonnese share a common ancestor? A historical source from 1774 may offer an intriguing clue about the origins of these remarkable Sardinian dogs. #Dogs #History #ancientdna #sardinia #genetics #book IMAGES AI GENERATED

Further evidence comes from ancient art, where these dogs appear to be depicted in several works, including one of the plates from the 'Carthage Treasure', preserved at the British Museum in London and dating to the 3rd-4th century AD. In my #book ROMA CANES MUNDI

The Molossus may trace its origins back to Anatolian farmers who entered Europe thousands of years ago with livestock and dogs. The real story is fascinating enough without the legends. More in my #book ORIGINS.

Even the 10th-century Byzantine Suida defines the Molossus from Epirus simply as "pastoral and broad." No ancient source clearly describes it as a war dog. Its world was the flock, not the battlefield.

Giovanni Padrone 🇺🇦 @giovannip62.wsocial.eu · 16/10/2026
Aristotle described the Molossus as an excellent livestock guardian. Virgil later paired it with Spartan greyhounds to protect flocks. Ancient sources consistently portray a livestock guardian dog, not a warrior.

Was it a gesture of affection? Archaeologists remain cautious. What we know is that woman and puppy were intentionally buried together, creating one of the oldest known testimonies of the human–dog relationship.

Ain Mallaha belongs to the Natufian culture, one of the first sedentary societies of the Near East. The burial suggests that the bond between humans and dogs was already far deeper than simple utility.

The Galgo didn’t run through Roman forums. It was shaped in medieval fields. If your breed isn’t mentioned in ancient texts, don’t worry: 98% of modern dogs are less than 400 years old. History is selective. Myth is generous.

The Spanish Galgo morphotype clearly emerges only from the 9th or 10th century onward, when we first find poetry and legislation dedicated to this sighthound. Spanish lawmakers protected it. It wasn't just a dog—it was a cultural asset. Everything before that? Pure speculation.

Between the 8th and 10th centuries, Arab breeders crossed Iberian native dogs with Sloughis—and maybe Salukis. The result? A new type of sighthound. Not Roman. Not imported. Born in medieval Spain. The ancestor of the #Galgo español. #Doghistory #pets #arabs #genetics #stem #medieval #book

Why dogs? At Gonur they guarded household and herd, kept company, and perhaps guided souls across the threshold of death. Not property — presence. I recount these historical tales in *Heaven Can Wait*, a book about the ancient dogs of Central and East Asia.

Some burials resist easy reading. In one pit, seven dogs lay together — different ages, sexes and causes of death, interred at different times in reused graves. Elsewhere a dog was tied and struck on the head, left to guard a tomb forever.

The archaeology, point by point: • At least 3 dog types: guardians ~80 cm at the withers, shepherds ~50 cm, small dogs up to 40 cm • The large ones recall today's Turkmen Alabai • Dog bones show no butchery: they were not food.

Gonur Depe (c. 2300-1600 BC) was a capital of trade, craft and ritual. Its excavators documented about 30 dog burials holding 53 individuals — puppies to old dogs — placed beside human graves, sometimes inside the courtyards of royal tombs. #archaeology

The “pure breed” was born only in the 20th century. In the 1920s–30s, FCI/ENCI fixed the official standard (32–38 cm). Genetics confirms it: today’s Italian Greyhound descends from a small, recent founder population.

In the 1800s, the breed was close to extinction. To save it — and to reduce its size even further — breeders crossed these little sighthounds with small terriers, such as the Manchester Terrier. That’s where certain coat colors and their remarkable liveliness come from!

Miniaturization began between the 1600s and 1700s. In European courts, the nobility started preferring smaller dogs for walking and salon life. This is when the “small” morphotype we know today appears for the first time.
