We've been seeing a lot of "in situ" lately in titles from fancy journals (not pointing any fingers 👀). I’ve delayed posting this, but as more and more come out, I'm afraid "in situ" is becoming an empty buzzword, much like "near-atomic" was for SPA 🔬 1/n #cryo-ET #cryo-EM #cryoET #cryoEM 🧪

Excited to share my paper! 🥳 Today in #Nature we reveal an 8 MDa Hdr electron bifurcating super-assembly in class I methanogens that couples the first and last steps of hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. A lineage-specific adaptation to anaerobic niches. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The cyanobacterium Acaryochloris marina can photosynthesize using far-red light at the edge of the visible spectrum. A new #ScienceAdvances study uncovers the basis of this system, offering insight into how plant photosynthesis could use longer wavelengths of light. scim.ag/43udhqY

Far-red chlorophyll d clusters extend photosystem I absorption toward the red limit
The cyanobacterium A. marina shows how photosynthetically active radiation can be expanded into the far-red spectral region.

This paper we (@hfmarcoleong.bsky.social and I) really love came out last week in @natcomms.nature.com 🎉 In there we have: a cool new subunit, new Chl f sites, and (finally) the long wavelength spectral assignment (www.nature.com/articles/s41...)

Mapping the absorption landscape of far-red Photosystem II - Nature Communications
Some cyanobacteria do oxygenic photosynthesis with near-infrared photons using specialized pigments. Here, the authors identify their positions and colors by combining phylogenetic, spectroscopic, and...

Have you ever looked at the night sky and wondered if there’s a chlorophyll f in the reaction centre of Photosystem I from far-red light adapted cyanobacteria? 🦠 Well, we did (don’t judge) and the work that followed is now out as a First Release in @science.org www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Locating the missing chlorophylls f in far-red photosystem I
The discovery of chlorophyll f-containing photosystems, with their long-wavelength photochemistry, represented a distinct, low-energy paradigm for oxygenic photosynthesis. Structural studies on chloro...

I'm happy to say that our new paper (and the first one out of my PhD thesis) is out! We describe the CryoEM structure of the phycobilisomes expressed during far-red light photoacclimation, and try to make sense of why these cyano are fond of "minimalism" :) doi.org/10.1038/s420...
