I had a lovely time at the ÖGSD Conference in Innsbruck (www.uibk.ac.at/de/ifd/sprac...) last week: highly interesting plenaries and presentations, good discussions & a great opportunity to reconnect with & meet new colleagues.

Gedanken zum 03. und 04. Juli 2026. # Erfurt, # Demokratie

In einer freiheitlichen Demokratie leben zu können ist nicht selbstverständlich. Ich wünsche mir sehr, dass wir es gemeinsam schaffen unsere freiheitlich demokratische Grundordnung auch in Zukunft zu erhalten. Gestern fand ich es sehr ermutigend, so viele Menschen unterschiedlichen Alters bei der wissenschaftlichen Veranstaltung, die nicht auf dem Campus stattfand, zu treffen. Auch fand ich es ganz wunderbar, so viele Kolleg:innen dort zu sehen. Heute habe ich mich über die vielen friedlichen und familienfreundlichen Veranstaltungen in der Stadt gefreut, bei denen Menschen zusammen und ins Gespräch kamen.

Sie ermöglicht Verständigung, prägt Identitäten und verbindet Menschen über geografische, soziale und kulturelle Grenzen hinweg. Als Sprachwissenschaftlerinnen und Sprachwissenschaftler begegnen wir dieser Vielfalt täglich: in unseren Forschungs-projekten, in unseren Lehrveranstaltungen und im Miteinander auf dem Campus.
Wir, das Seminar für Sprachwissenschaft, bekennen uns ausdrücklich zu den Werten, die unsere Wissenschaft seit jeher prägen: Offenheit, Respekt und die Wertschätzung an sprachlicher wie kultureller Vielfalt.
Wir sind überzeugt, dass eine pluralistische Gesellschaft die Grundlage für ein lebendiges wissenschaftliches Arbeiten ist. Demokratische Werte, gegenseitiger Respekt und die Anerkennung vielfältiger Lebens- und Identitätsformen müssen gelebte Praxis sein – im Hörsaal, im Forschungsalltag und darüber hinaus. Jede Art von Ausgrenzung, Diskriminierung und alle Formen gruppenbezogener Menschenfeindlichkeit haben hier keinen Platz.
Gemeinsam mit unseren Studierenden, Lehrenden und Forschenden aus aller Welt gestalten wir einen Ort, an dem Sprache in ihrer ganzen Vielfalt ergründet, gelehrt und als Brücke zwischen Menschen sichtbar gemacht wird.

Over the years, I have frequently referred to "Let's talk and talk about it" by Willis Edmondson & Juliane House (1981), which had been out of print for some time. I was delighted to come across "Expressions, Speech Acts & Discourse" by Edmondson, House & Kadar published in 2023 by CUP.
