I thought about this on and off over the weekend. I think for me what it comes down to is that so much of the TG-TF genre is either slapstick (>90% of mainstream content) or smut (>90% of internet content). Content that is rooted in character and story — taking both seriously — is rare in the genre.

100% agree. It's been a terrific year to be a #TradingPostInn reader. To your point further down the thread, I do think it's a reflection of multiple years paying off, which is one of the unique strengths of the blog/real-time epistolary format.

I think all fiction (not just TG/TF fiction) asks fundamental questions about personal identity and, acknowledging the irresolvability of those questions, still offers possible resolutions because damnit, that's what we do as humans for each other. With #TradingPostInn, I've enjoyed watching how...

Just came across an Amazon Kindle title, with an AI-generated cover, that's heavily plagiarized from a 2005 Fictionmania story I immediately recognized. I knew this kind of thing was happening, obviously, but it was still so shocking to discover something like that while casually browsing.

Anyone familiar with the genre, and the boom years of the younger reader chapter books, will immediately recognize this as the love letter that it is.

Damn, I always enjoy it with one year's "chapter" transitions into a new year and the *STORY* (not merely the narrator) continues in a new direction.

Everyone would see this and realize this and intensely feel this and practice this, if everything were fair in this world.

It is also – if I may say so – in my "Hall of Fame," and if anyone happens to stumble upon this post, they really ought to read it!

"Solving a puzzle where you are designing the pieces" is such a terrific way to describe the act of artistic creation – simultaneously how we face the challenges as well as how we celebrate the breakthroughs.

Is there a tool to read Blogger oldest-to-newest? So far I've been copying/pasting into a Pages doc to read – and that's working! Plus the efficient titles/tagging system at #TradingPostInn makes it relatively quick to find what I need. But there has to be a better way, right??

fuck sam altman forever for taking away the last places where we could engage in good faith: the creative arts, which should be a testament to human ingenuity. i am so mad that everything i read or listen to or admire is now tainted with doubt. do you understand? he is a thief of joy and i HATE HIM

A little while ago, reader @gideonwordsworth.bsky.social asked me if I had a sort of "Hall of Fame" for TG and TF stories. I gave him some answers, and now after thinking about it some more, I've got more to say! liamslade.com/2026/04/17/t...

Epistolary narratives like #TradingPostInn are capable of great swerves like this, which resonate all the more due to the verisimilitude granted by the form.

I always look forward to the annual Otherwise Award, "an annual literary prize for science fiction or fantasy that expands or explores our understanding of gender." This selection looks intriguing, and I'm quite curious about The Everlasting and Part-Time Girl from the long list as well.

I really, really recommend all of @liamslade.bsky.social's TG-TF books, but "Both" is my absolute favorite. Start with it if you want, or save it for last as an extra special treat, but don't miss it!

Essentially! It's a character-driven genre, and moments/ sensations matter because they affect characters we've connected with. Story matters because we as readers care about what *happens* to those characters (and story turns deepen our empathy for them), but "sensation" is still central.
