The manga is absolutely a delight to read. The artwork is so damn beautiful & cleverly paneled. It's that panel work where Bug Teams has to get creative, they have to lean on the strengths of their medium to match the manga's cleverness. For instance, Qif's dragon sequence is only *3* manga panels.

Unfortunately, no. That panel is deep into the Silver Eve arc. Season two will be the conclusion of the Romonon arc and will likely complete the Great Hall arc, if they continue with the pacing they have been doing.

Qifrey's water dragon sequence is on the level of animation excellence you don't normally see outside of theatrical releases. But then there's simple things like having a shot from Qifrey perspective and it is purposely blurry AF. They lean on what's special with the medium to elevate the work 3/3

An example is Coco's Dahda Range flight. They add scenes of Coco learning how to use a pigment stone with her mother and other family sequences to showcase just how much love they shared while she soars through this beautiful dawn colored sky with a sweeping soundtrack. 2/?

If they keep the same storyboarder, I'm really excited to see what future seasons look like. Bug Films take into account that they have ten years of manga to draw upon and use that knowledge to enhance shots. Where they can't utilize Shirahama's paneling they enhance scenes w spectacle. 1/2

I’m a sucker for Olly shading Qifrey from the sun b/c of his condition so I willll be drawing it whenever I can slap it in there haha

I know Qifrey canonically wears his glasses when he sleeps but I disagree with the sentiment lmfao

I originally intended for this to be set further in the future when the girls are already grown up and was popping by to visit but I had NO ideas for what anyone’s future outfits would be hence why it’s set post canon but not too far

Also I head canon that Olly snores like crazy, think booming dad snore but Qifrey treats it like white noise

Qifrey wakes up first and looks over at Olly drooling as he snores loudly.

“Olly~~” he calls out gently.

Olly continues snoring, not even a stir.

Qifrey smacks him lighting on the cheek with his finger tips. Smack smack smack. “It’s time to wake up!” Smack smack smack.

“Unghh,” Olly groans as he slowly blinks the sleep from his eyes.

“Good morning!”

He rubs his eyes, “Ain’t it past high noon?” Then reaches towards Qifrey, “There’s grass in your hair, hold still”

Olly meticulously removed the grass from Qifrey’s hair one by one. Meanwhile Qifrey picks up the strays and starts sticking them in Olly’s hair as he chuckles mischievously.

By the time they’re both finish Qifrey looks all prim and proper and Olly’s hair is a mess. He grabs Qifrey’s by the shoulders and Qifrey turns away and bends over in laughter, “Hey-“

The girls and walking downhill when they catch a glimpse of their teacher running away from Olly. He screams half heartedly as Olly eventually catches him, “Gotcha!” They hear him scream.

“I haven’t played tag in forever!” Tetia clasps her hands together as she reminisces.

“Agott let’s go join them!” Coco look up towards Agott with arms entwined.

“So childish,” Agott scoffs with no bite to her tone, she avoids eye contact as she tries to hide the blush forming on her face.

“I don’t think Qifrey-sensei is trying …” Richeh observes.

“Pwee ~” Brushbuddy stands on her shoulder nodding in agreement.

I absolutely loved this sequence. "How are these kids so strong in the face of everything? At their age I only survived because Olly and Beldaruit dragged me through my trauma............Oh. Wait. Am I actually helping this time??!" It's so hard for him to see the good he does as a teacher.

I recommend it. They were also mindful of accent consistency. Witch residents of Kahln had Irish accents. Qifrey's and Agott's accents are very posh, while Utowin and Olruggio both have a thick Yorkshire accent since they both hail from Ghodrey.

All witch characters (save for Coco) in the English dub all have a varied accents from the British Isles. The casting director wanted to use accents to further alienate witch society from the rest of Zohza. Everyone else uses an American accent. (Except Custas which leans Romani.)

A 4 panels comic. The story takes place when Qifrey and Olruggio are both young apprentices.
On the first panel, Beldaruit asks Qifrey "so... what is going on with this tassel exchange?". The little boy does not answer and the atmosphere is heavy.
On the second panel, Qifrey answers :"...nothing. stop being nosy." Beldaruit knows he wouldn't get anything from his apprentice and says "fine! Keep your secrets". The atmosphere is quite dark around Qifrey.

On the third panel, beldaruit asks the exact same question to Olruggio. Little olruggio is very overwelmed and is kind of panicking as he knows the implications of exchanging tassels, but he also doesnt know why the exchange happened.
On the forth panel, beldaruit gets more insistent by saying " Olruggio of Ghodrey! Are you courting my dearest apprentice?" Olruggio is still overwelemed by the ordeal and tries to flee by answering "no...? You know what? I forgot some contractions somewhere! I have got to go...to find them. Bye!!" And flees.

A 3 panels comic. The story also takes place when Qifrey and Olruggio are both young apprentice.
One the first panel, Beldaruit's eyes are closed, he is deep into concentration, and says "Olruggio of Ghodrey...because my dearest, sweetest, marvelous apprentice's actions don't allow me to provide essential information that come with your age. I am seeing forced to give them to you"

Second panel: beldaruit gets closer to little olly and asks : "say, Olruggio, have you ever heard of 'the birds and the bees' before today?"

Last panel: this takes place later that day, both qifrey and olruggio are lying on grass. Olly looks very overwhelmed and is grabbing his cloak tight, clearly not recovering from his talk with Beldaruit. While Qifrey looks like an angry wet cat and complains about his master :"bedaruit keeps trying to talk about some idiotic 'birds and bees'. Why would I care? There are no birds or bees where we live! We live under stupid water!! Duh!!"

What I think is so interesting about when Coco and Qifrey get angry/upset is just the pure desperation that’s in that anger. Like whenever we see either of them show that raw of emotion there’s SO much more than just anger, there’s fear and frustration and like this insane desperation

Qifrey is also kind of perfect for teaching Coco because he also does not like witch society, so it's fertile ground for his students to second guess things. He bends A LOT of rules already. (If you're anime-only I'll just say that Qifrey has a connection to very powerful person on the inside)

They also could have kidnapped Coco in the labyrinth at any point in time, but didn't. They want Coco where she is under Qifrey's care and has to be integrated in pointed cap society. Iguin likely wants Coco to get her fill of the hypocrisy of The Pact so she's more willing to break it.

I really want a Witch Hat Atelier Anime Art Book, just because there *has* to be floorplan diagrams of how that Atelier is assembled. That cluster of haphazardly joined buildings barely makes any sense. There's so many sets of random stairs that spiral all over the place! 🫠
