I'm still deep in my end of season review writeup. This is one of the many angles I'm looking at for the Vitello section. He really pushed relievers into a second inning of work and performance was not good. Giants RP innings were nearly identical in 2025 and 2026 btw.

Interesting note on 14th round pick Alex Solis (150k bonus) and plenty of other Giants arms (Bolemon, Laroche, George, Bryans, Lalane). This is what I had on him in my review write up:

Contextualization is where the gap is for the most part. Accounting for park, weather, pitcher quality, defense quality, lineup around them, handedness, position. But these create limited incremental improvements. From my work, adding Statcast data helped very little. A bit mind blowing for me.

I’ve dedicated all of my limited free time to this over the past couple of months and am coming to an unexpected conclusion. For hitters, knowing PA, H, HR, K, BB from prior seasons can give you a projection that is ~90% as accurate a modern model for projecting talent and 85% at playing time.

Since 2000, Dombrowski (DET), Friedman (TB), and Moore (KC) had worse two-year starts than Posey and later made the playoffs. Epstein (CHC), Luhnow (HOU) and Elias (BAL) did too, after teardowns. Player to FO like Mike Flanagan and Dave Stewart started like Posey, neither had a winning season as GM.

The Giants finished 65–97, leaving Posey at 146–178 (.451): the worst first two years of any SF-era GM/POBO. Only 3 of 10 regimes had a lower win% than the two seasons before they took over. Posey’s decline, from .491 (2023-24) to .451, is the largest.

This went pretty poorly. 9 games below the floor is a big miss. Team wRC+ was 23rd, OAA 22nd. SP ERA- 24th, RP ERA- 20th. Other than predicting pitching would be bad, got most wrong or really wrong. Only saving grace is that my win total expectation was closer than most. #dontknowball

giants bunting has shot way up during the season. 3.8% of batted balls in september is the most of any team in any month this year, first team month since 2018 to cross even 3.5%

Doval will enter his final year of arb in 2027, under current rules. Likely at ~7M. Doubt the Giants will want to pay that, so he will be non-tendered. Maybe this claim gives them the inside lane on re-signing him for cheaper after he becomes a FA.

Getting better, this is projecting 2026 based on data through 2025. Minor league defense is so hard to model, really big limitation so far. Bust rate for prospects is so high that modeling someone like Eldridge entering 2026 is also hard.

If Tidwell requires TJ, he would be the fourth Giant this year who has appeared in the majors to have it. That leads MLB in 2026, but plenty of other seasons where teams have had more. 2025 AZ had 7. 3 other teams have had 6 in a season.

I didn’t watch this game, but Vitello is what I would call a squirrel manager. Overwhelmingly focused on saving up acorns for the future that he loses sight of the present. I don’t remember Tony La Russa being that way in particular but it was a common affliction of managers in the prior generation.

I reached out to a few people (not Jason, who does great work!) who thought that was a shrewd addition by the Giants. Not mentioned in Jason's write up is the attack angle, which he pulls the ball in the air regularly. Combine that with bat speed and there's some power upisde.

Based on the limited sample of what I’ve seen this year from Whisenhunt, Tidwell, Molina, Wilkinson, and Marte, there is only one guy I see much hope for as a SP. It’s Anthony Molina. FB looked better in his first app with Giants than he did with Atlanta earlier in the year. He’s starting tonight.

It was just 2 IP, but was confused by what Seth Lonsway was doing. He should be throwing his sweeper and CB like 60-70% of the time. Instead it was the bad fb group two thirds of the time. He was just filling in, but why not play to his strengths. I don’t know, maybe my thinking is unsophisticated.

Yunior Marte looked ok. FB needs be bonuses at a <40% level I think. SL feel looked a bit worse than last year, but limited sample, there were a few good ones in there. Split is a winner, threw a few elite ones. Maybe a more durable Winn type arm in the pen. A bit higher ceiling than him too.

It’s hard to fully understand how this 2022 team won 81 games and this year’s team will be like 20 below that. Hope this entire group does some deep self reflection on why both happened. A current advisor to POBO was on that team. www.baseball-reference.com/teams/SFG/20...
