I’m very grateful to my co-authors, especially Josh Firth and Adelaide (Daisy) Abraham for their fantastic supervision, plus the wider lab group @egioxford.bsky.social and everyone who originally collected these data!

Patterns of social trade-offs during pair bonding varied with sex and age. For example, first-winter males increased the proportion of their associations that were with their partner (relative to other birds) more than females did, while showing greater stability in their wider social associations.

According to Dunbar's theories, a new partner tends to push two friends out of our social circle. But what do social trade-offs look like in animals? We used a Great Tit population to test if an individual's sex affects the trade-off between associating with a future partner and with other birds.

Delighted that my master's project @biology.ox.ac.uk about social trade-offs in a wild population of birds is now published in Animal Behaviour @asab.org doi.org/10.1016/j.an... 🧵

1,935 days after my first tutorial as a student, I found myself on the other side of the table for the first time today, delivering a tutorial at Worcester College.

Nice to welcome my new DPhil students with an evening at St Hugh’s College. Welcome Gayatri Kumar, @smthmpsn.bsky.social and @ghtrabin.bsky.social. The White Stork was not part of the formal evening, but I was pleased to see it and grab a photo earlier in the week.

My first go at a pigeon release. Just 10 mins and they’ll be back home. I like to tell myself they won’t take off unless I give them a verbal instruction. The jury’s still out on whether or not that’s true… Thanks @ghtrabin.bsky.social for showing me the ropes!

Always delighted to be invited to the @btobirds.bsky.social Marsh Awards reception at the Society of Wildlife Artists Natural Eye exhibition. Great to catch up with everything the BTO Youth Advisory Panel has been up to too, having been an alumnus of the panel for the last year.

It was a privilege to spend last week in (stunning!) Shetland with this great team, helping find out about Gannet vision and the black eyes of Gannet bird flu survivors.
