Or just use MST in BC and Yukon and CST in AB. Same thing.

BC and YT are now permanently on MST (UTC -7) but they want to call it Pacific Time and Yukon Time instead of MST. No idea why. AB is now permanently CST (UTC -6) like SK next door, but they want to call it Alberta Time. Again, no idea why. 2/? #DST

Politicians are strange. With Alberta and British Columbia switching to what they want to call "Permanent Daylight Saving Time" they've actually simplified Canada's time zone system but •need• to complicate it by inventing new names for existing time zones. 1/? #DST

One of these days, I'm going to actually internalize the idea that writing #documentation •as• I do something is far more efficient than going back and figuring out what I did when I'm finished.

Why is it that the folks responsible for deploying physical #security tend to be completely oblivious when it comes to #InfoSec? “We’ve installed all of these cameras and want you to forward these ports from the Internet now.” #HowAboutNo

In the spirit of RFC 1925 7a (and Meat Loaf) two out of three are usually enough, but we’ll always want it all. Windows and MacOS are pretty good at delivering on two or more, but now I’m wondering if Linux’ lack of adoption on the desktop is related. 2/x

Engaged in a #Windows vs #MacOS vs #Linux discussion the other day that (for once) didn’t devolve into a fan-driven religious war. It got me thinking that the three things that drive our choices are value, consistency, and ecosystem. (I’m sure that there are more. Feel free to weigh in.) 1/x

Yes, #AI can be an example of this, but that’s not alone, nor is it where it all started. Vendors have been pushing products that claim to minimise the need for basic technical skills for years and we’ve bought into it because we would rather invest in technology than our people… or ourselves. 2/2

Jody Lemoine CD 🇨🇦 @ghostinthenet.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Maybe I’m just a dinosaur. I’m still of the opinion that products and services that help us do things with no requirement for us to understand what we’re doing are ultimately serving us poorly. 1/2

The thing we didn’t consider was #corgi #spite. Ultra-powerful corgi spite. I hit the beeper, he stopped barking, and then promptly turned around to roll in a particularly pungent pile of vermin spoor. Sigh. Bath time. I should have known something like this would happen. 2/2

So… we’ve been using a beeper to train Charles to stop madly barking at the neighbour. He barks, we activate the beeper, he stops. Hoping that he’ll eventually get the idea that he shouldn’t bark at the neighbour, though we may be more hopeful than we should be. 1/2

Interesting to see an online trend toward rejecting posts as #AI slop… whether they are or not. It’s not quite critical thinking, and it may be little more than trolling, but at least there’s some skepticism before blind acceptance. That’s better than we’ve had in a long while.

Well, huh. Retrofitting #MikroTik equipment on a PPPoE WISP for #IPv6 and labbing out the design. The PD for the clients can be handled entirely through RADIUS and the PPPoE server. CE still needs a separate PPPoE and DHCP-PD client configuration, but everything on the PE is simple. Liking. #NetEng

There's a reason #popup blockers exist. Nobody likes being interrupted by a tangential frame sticking itself in our faces. Apparently the designers behind modern web sites (and those behind #ads that drive them) have forgotten this. Now we have to deal. Now I need a hotkey for the #reader function.

Historically, technical folks have feared career change (yes, it’s a change and not a progression) into management because they fear that their hard-won technical skills will atrophy. It’s a legitimate fear. Skills need to be used to be kept. So… is managing a fleet of #AI agents any different?

Would it •really• be too much to provide the actual error in the ticket so that I don’t have to rely on my ultra-vague crystal ball? If I have to resort to that, the best I can do is acknowledge that something isn’t working and offer moral support. 2/2 #IT #Support

The large-scale analytics and correlation present a •far• better value proposition, but even then there are a lot of folks conflating “need” and “want” there. NLIs are next to worthless unless you’re looking to micromanage prompts because employees can’t be counted on to be properly sycophantic.

At that scale, one could always self-host the models and move the bulk of that opex to capex, but that would be heretical to the one true faith of *aaS. 🙂

I'll also weigh in that a self-proclaimed AI company (Cisco) doesn't have much credibility when they tell us that AI is all that. Do I smell a vague odour (kinda like the one that came from IBM in the late 1980s) coming from West Tasman Drive?

I'm getting old too and resistant to change too. I fight that resistance, but still think that change needs a purpose beyond change itself. AI is still a solution looking for a problem and if the automation folks think that it will help them deal with massive scale, I suppose that's purpose enough.
