Cannot believe how lucky I was for that to be my first-ever Lynx game!!💚One of the most beautifully-played games of basketball I’ve witnessed in person from Olivia Miles, and an overall exciting and intense contest! Love the Lynx!
A photo showing the aftermath of a winning Minnesota Lynx game! Looking down to the court from the upper part of the lower bowl, with the enormous jumbotron (scoreboard) hanging above the court! On the screen are some Lynx players and lynx WIN, and players and media are starting immediate postgame things on the court! The court and immediate seats are brightly lit and the rest of the crowd is bathed in shadow.

In the top foreground, 6 banners are visible, showing retired numbers for the Lynx and one of their championships. The arena is still mostly empty and there is a giant scoreboard hanging above the court.

This isn’t from a recent protest (No Kings Mpls in Oct 2025) and even THEN the college students were getting way more involved than they had been earlier in the year! I mean, are you gonna try to tell me anyone but a bunch of college dudes would have created this sign? 😅Lol. Students hate ICE/trump!
A graphic anti-Trump, anti-ICE protest sign with a rather great likeness of Donald Trump saying “SATAN I’m cumming,” as Satan, holding pitchfork in one hand, jerks trump off with the other hand. A pentagram is next to Satan, and next to the scene in small letters is written in scrawly sharpie handwriting “objects may appear larger than they actually are” with an arrow to the penis

ICE is not just in urban areas!! They are in our rural county seat towns and even smaller places! Immigrants and refugees are a major part of rural Minnesota, especially southern Minnesota!
Post from a Worthington MN Ice watch group about the illegal detainment of a resident. The post reads:
To clarify:
The person detained today had legal documentation to be in this country
He has no criminal record
He was simply jumpstarting his car when he was surrounded.
This is a reality many people still do not grasp.
Rest of post is mostly all information about rapid response and people’s rights, then:
What happened today was a major blow to our city.
This person is a model member of our community: hard worker, familia man, and respected.

Please spread the truth!! From StarTrib, it was the man’s FAMILY who came outside of HIS HOUSE to defend him, they ran inside and he was shot in the process. the man had been chased by agents (with knows WHAT warrants) and he drove back to his house! there were children in the house!
Headline: Man’s family fought agents with shovels before agents shot man, sources say

After a car chase involving federal agents on Interstate 94, a man crashed his car in front of his home in north Mpls, multiple sources with knowledge of the incident say.

The man’s family came out of the home and started fighting agents with shovels before an agent shot the subjext of the car chase in the lef.

The Dept of Homeland Security said the agent fired “defensive shots.”

“The attacked officer and subject are both in the hospital,” DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said.

Truly, you cannot silence us, and Minnesotans have—to put it lightly—had it.
Two signs on someone’s back: One on the top that says “Minnesota fought racists in 1861–we’ll do it again,” and a second that says “The blood of Minnesota demands JUSTICE.”

You cannot silence Minnesotans! Minneapolis, Jan. 10, 2026
In the middle of large, tightly packed crowd of protestors, Minnesota’s beautiful flag flies. It is two shades of blue, one dark blue, in the rough shape of Minnesota, and the rest of the flag a lighter blue. An eight-pointed white star is in the center of the dark blue part of the flag. Under the flag is a sign that says “You cannot silence US!” Other flags (a Pride flag, upside-down American flags) are visible, along with a sign that says “all are welcome except ICE”

[if you haven’t seen it this is the meme format I am riffing off of; it has become one of my absolute favorites lmao]
A screenshot of an old twitter post by user ettingermentum that reads at the top “nice argument. However i have already portrayed myself as the sleek FDR bullet train and you as the seething coal locomotive.”

Below the text is a presumably mid 1930s to early 1940s satirical cartoon-like image of two locomotives: One sleek silver streamlined train with a face and chin and nose and glasses like President FDR, and the other a smaller, angry coal-belching old-fashioned brown locomotive with a huge mouth and furious eyes staring seethingly at the pompous FDR train, as they head down a double-tracked RR line in parallel the sky in the background is burnt orange with a telegraph/telephone pole in the left background next to FDR train.

As a Minnesotan not living in MN, my heart is once again torn apart by what’s happened there today. I can offer these photos of the stunning sunset (with rising new crescent moon) in Durham, NC last night as a bit of peace. Thinking of those directly and indirectly affected + everyone in MN.
A wide-angle photo of a beautiful sunset. The lower part of the photo is a dark tree-line, above which is a multi-colored sunset in warm orange, blue, and then large purple/pink-inflected clouds at the top. There are wispy darker clouds as well. All is calm, peaceful, and beautiful. Zoomed in picture of the same sunset (A wide-angle photo of a beautiful sunset. On one hand, this game includes the poor 2025 Minnesota Twins. On the other hand, baseball on a night like this! ❤️
A picture of the view of Yankee Stadium from way up behind home plate. It’s a gorgeous summer’s night and the sky is a pale blue transitioning to a dark blue-gray farther down. The green grass is perfectly manicured in long vertical stripes, and the seats in view are mostly filled. The players are on the field and the fame is in progress. There’s a steady breeze that’s keeping the flags flapping at the top of the stadium

The S. St. Paul Monorail owners proposed a connection to downtown St. Paul, but that never happened. The company (Enos Electric Railway of NJ) also proposed a line connecting Minneapolis and St. Paul, as shown in this fanciful rendering! Would've been a sight to see if it'd happened!
A late 19th century black and white rendering (so to speak!) with a monorail line superimposed over a photograph of downtown St. Paul, used by the Enos Electric Railway company to boost their proposal to connect downtown St. Paul to Mpls via a monorail line. The buildings, including (I think) the former St. Paul City Hall, are of fairly ornate stone, in contrast to the metal elevated monorail line in the foreground.

For something completely different: One of the few photographs of the famous, very short-lived (as in, several months) South St. Paul (MN) Monorail, shown in 1886-'87. A demonstration line, it was only 1,260 ft long & went to the top of the river bluff along Bryant Ave.
A screenshot of a vintage black and white photograph showing the famous South St. Paul Monorail (Minnesota). Photo circa 1886-'87, in the Bryant Ave area. Group wanted to do a real estate development in South St. Paul. Monorail led to it. Development and monorail failed. The photograph shows the monorail guideway, which is an iron structure held up by columns. The monorail car is visible in the far right background on the monorail track. The track is surrounded by trees.

#Handsoff Raleigh! North Carolinians have HAD it! Great crowd. This shows the central portions (but not all) of the protest. Really impressive energy all around! I liked the “fire musk, save Elmo” sign. This was almost 1.5 hrs into the protest on a hot day so some had left already, too.

Outstanding turnout for #HandsOff in Raleigh! Zoom in on this pic to get a sense of how packed it was in the central area. Organizers said 10,000—that may be high but I’d say at least over 5,000 in total! Protest was dispersed on the mall + multiple city blocks so hard to get a full picture.
A huge packed protest crowd of thousands is visible behind a rally stage, in between imposing stone-faces buildings. Many people are golding up handmade signs. The sky is bright blue and the sun is bright!

Tonight I learned: During the heyday of Twin City Lines running steamboat service on Lake Minnetonka, there was for a brief time a TCRT employee had the epic title of Commodore of the Fleet, who (naturally) was in charge of coordinating the steamboat operations. There were 4 routes in total!
A very small and cute steamboat, the Stillwater, sits at a dock on Lake Minnetonka sometime between 1906 and 1910. The photo is black and white. The steamboat is made of wood and sits low in the lakewater next to the dock, with one enclosed main cabin, and a small upper deck, where two people dressed in period attire are standing. The Stillwater is flying a jaunty flag with its name on it. Three people are standing on the dock. The boat has one small smokestack near the back of it. I'm sincerely sorry, but in addition to seeing no clear promises of *how* transit service would materially, holistically IMPROVE for regular riders, it is an indictment of a certain American mentality that moving 1,000s of transit riders OFF a major street is meant to *improve* (buzzword) vibrancy!

Bridal Veil Falls circa. 1865 to 1880, Upton's Views of Minnesota via MN Digital Library collection.mndigital.org/catalog/mpls...
A stereopticon slide view of Bridal Veil Falls, Minneapolis, MN, taken somewhere between 1865 and 1880. The doubled black and white image (for use in the stereopticon viewer) shows a decently tall--but not that tall--wispy waterfall coming off the edge of a rough limestone cliff and tumbling onto the pile of rocks below. The wispy train of water actually somewhat does resemble a traditional white bridal veil! On the cliff behind the falls are barren shrubs and trees.

The first rendering I've seen of Macalester College's new combined 250-bed upperclass dorm and admissions/"welcome center" building, sent to Mac alums + community members earlier today. This would be on Grand Ave., replacing the Cultural House [controversy], a parking lot, and a vacant lot. 1/8
An full-color architectural rendering of a potential new large building (250-bed dorm and 'welcome center' aka admissions) on the campus of Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. The rendering shows one very large, half block-long, 5-story building. The building's facade is mostly made of a reddish brick, with white accents on the top and bottom floors. The building is shown facing an urban street, from the perspective of the college's campus, with a walking path and gardens in the foreground. The large building's facade is also 'articulated'--instead of one long, uninterrupted wall, the massing is broken up in multiple places, with a potential 2nd story courtyard inbetween two sections of the dorm, and another gap separating the 2nd section of the dorm from the welcome center/dorm part of the building. The 1st section of the building contains the admissions/welcome center area, and the top three floor are cantilevered out over a small patio-type area, supported by very thin metal-looking columns. The entrance to the admissions/welcome center looks out onto the patio, and has two large street-facing windows in addition to a door. The brick or cladding on the entrance area is white.

A freshly painted bus-only lane on W. Lake St., Minneapolis, MN for your Friday!! A thing of beauty. Photo taken by Metro Transit and sent in today's construction update. Metro Transit's B Line (arterial bus rapid transit line) is under construction and slated to open in June of next year.
A possibly drone-taken photograph of W. Lake St. in Minneapolis, Minnesota, taken on a bright sunny day, with blue skies. The photo is looking east down Lake St., towards I-35W. The focal point of the photo is the street, newly resurfaced and restriped, with one lane fully painted a very bright red! This is/will be a bus lane for Metro Transit's buses--specifically the upcoming B Line arterial bus rapid transit line--to use. The street is framed by several new 6-8 story apartment buildings on one side of the street, with taller buildings in the background. Another building is under construction. The other side of the street is mostly parking lots and low, one-story buildings in the foreground, with more density in the background. In the far distance in the center of the photo, the former Sears building--now the Midtown Global Market building--is visible.

Amtrak's new Borealis service passed the Empire Builder again today! The EB waited for the Borealis to pass before crossing the Mississippi into La Crosse, WI. I'm happy for all those on the Borealis who'd otherwise have no other option but to be on the train that was ~2.5 hrs late into St. Paul!
A screenshot of an Amtrak status map, with a black basemap. Visible are roads and a small bit of the Amtrak route, symbolized in blue, that Amtrak's Borealis and Empire Builder trains share between Chicago and St. Paul. There are three colored rectangle visible on the map: Train 8, in black, is the eastbound Empire Builder, and is black in color because it is extremely late. Also visible are trains 1340 and 1333 in green. Train 1340 is close to on-time, hence the green, and passed the Empire Builder near La Crosse, WI since the EB was so late.

Seeing this good old map validated me so much! Love having data back me up as to "man why do I never feel like there's a good breeze where I live in the Piedmont of North Carolina!" Compared to even the Twin Cities of MN, average wind speeds are notably lower--and ~ half of where I grew up in SW MN!
A brightly colored map of the United States showing average wind speeds in meters per second, or, in other words, the wind power resource estimates for the nation. The entire Great Plains and parts of the Upper Midwest are dark to light purple and red/orange, indicating high wind speeds of at least ~7 m/s up to 9+ m/s. The American Southeast, such as the Carolinas, have much slower average wind speeds, and are show in light to dark green, primarily. The average windspeeds in the Piedmont of NC are generally only 4 to 5 m/s, or in many areas roughly half of the Great Plains.

I haven't see Amtrak's Borealis (train 1333) be perfectly on time or close to it for this much of its run in a while. Slated to actually arrive in St. Paul right on time! Feels like CPKC's dispatchers took pity on it after yesterday's 3+ hr delay caused by the tragedy (bike vs. train) in Oconomowoc

One of the most meh to (imo) fairly ugly but functional war memorials in MN is the Nobles County Library--that is, the War Memorial Library, or the Nobles County War Memorial Building - Library and Museum (as originally conceived). Inside, it does have the whole plaques of war dead & all.
A picture the Nobles County, MN Library and War Memorial Building. It's a perfectly blue, sunny day, and the library, surrounded by green grass and a few green trees, is a long, low, mostly unremarkable brick midcentury building with odd, angular roof embellishments over part of the front, facing the street.
