Grammaticalization people, how much do you agree with this? "Clearly therefore, we can't really evoke grammaticalization if no indication is given about the history and the time line one is talking about."

New paper out 🥳 Joint work with @danielaltshuler.bsky.social on monosyndetic and bisyndetic conjunction in Gizey. I keep coming back to this reviewer’s comment: “Absolutely publishable as is… no suggestions for improvement (first time in 20+ years!)” 🤣🤣. It's here: journals.flvc.org/sal/article/...

Paris friends! Excited to speak here soon. I'll present data on negation in Gizey, and discuss the intriguing behaviour of a negative existential that is attested across the Northern Masa languages. Hope to see you there!
advert for a meeting in Paris (Saturday December 6) on negation in the Afro-asiatic languages. Meeting organised by Amina Mettouchi and Andréas Stauder.

Watched Hind Meddeb’s “Sudan, remember us” yesterday and strongly recommend it (if you haven’t seen it). Love how it captures poetry in the midst of absurd brutality.

Cool read this morning: "Ideophonic sequences: Challenging the asymmetric syntactic structure hypothesis" in @glossa-linguistics.bsky.social. Two main questions: 1) Do ideophone sequences function as constituents, and) 2 Do they have flat or hierarchical structure? doi.org/10.16995/glo...

When the war broke out, I fled. But stayed in touch with some students. Today, one, Zadolf, has become a software engineer. Between classes at the uni, he converts dictionaries compiled by Tonino into mobile apps. The first one is on PlayStore. Just another app? No, a major achievement. 👏
