Unmistakable rise in forest fires, getting bigger, longer, more destructive: 4 of the 5 worst years on record occurred since 2020. Boreal & temperate conifer forests now particularly vulnerable. Forests should be carbon sinks but in 2023 & 2024 they only absorbed ¼ of the CO2 they typically do.
