Stargazing 5 xkcd.com/3301/
4-panel comic. (1) [Black background with person with shoulder-length hair with raised arms in front in white, with figures in gray in the background.] PERSON 1: Welcome to stargazing! I’m back, despite efforts by astronomers who hate cool space facts to cover me up so I can’t see the sky anymore! Nice try, losers! Next time buy a tarp that’s harder to chew through! (2) [Person looks toward binoculars in hand.] PERSON 1: Now, let’s spy on some stars! Does everyone have binoculars? If you don’t, find someone looking at birds and try to grab theirs. Stars are the birds of the sky. (3) [Close-up on Person but with white background.] PERSON 1: But stars aren’t the only weird lights. Sometimes the sky fills with rippling colors. That’s the sky’s screensaver. It’s very pretty, so don’t move your mouse and ruin it. (4) [Switch back to black background, person points up while figures in background look toward where she’s pointing.] PERSON 1: That blob is a comet. People used to think they were harbingers of doom. We now know they’re boring, so we have to find new reasons to use the word “harbinger.” I’m a harbinger of astronomy! Cool facts are nigh!

Did you know the wasabi in most sushi restaurants isn't wasabi? Or that a chemical synergy between dried seaweed and raw fish enhances sushi's savoury flavours? Learn more about sushi science with this infographic, as requested by my sushi-mad seven-year-old 🍣 wp.me/s4aPLT-sushi #ChemSky 🧪
This infographic titled "Sushi chemistry: nori, wasabi and sticky rice" explores the science behind sushi. It features three main panels with illustrations, chemical structures, and explanations. The left section explains how amylopectin in rice creates stickiness and how acetic acid from vinegar aids gelatinisation. The middle panel covers umami flavours from glutamate, inosinate, and guanylate found in nori and raw fish, displaying their molecular structures. The right panel discusses allyl isothiocyanate in wasabi and horseradish, along with gingerol and shogaol compounds in pickled ginger (gari). Photos of six different sushi rolls line the bottom.

Last night was a beautiful night out in Portland, lucky to see Liz Phair and Sleater-Kinney play to an enthusiastic crowd. S-K closed with a tremendous, energetic & suitably LOUD rendition of 'Entertain' off of their classic album The Woods. Highly recommend seeing them live if you can!

Hercule Poirot dressed all in black speaks to Captain Hastings in a grand hallway “Please ask the suspects to gather in the library, Hastings: I wish to reveal that our births are random, our lives meaningless, and our deaths absurd.”

Caption “Having investigated so many awful murders over the years, it was perhaps unsurprising that Hercule Poirot turned to Existentialism”

p.s. Poirot had presumably been reading a lot of Sartre recently…

Infographic titled "Watermelon colour, aroma, and explosions" by Compound Interest. Red flesh color comes from lycopene. Aroma stems from fatty acid oxidation producing C6 and C9 aldehydes: (Z,Z)-3,6-nonadienal (watermelon odor) and (Z)-3-hexenal (grass odor). Exploding watermelons in Eastern China in 2011 were caused by overuse of the growth regulator forchlorfenuron during wet weather, which accelerates cell division and growth.

Infographic on suppressing wildfires with chemistry. The graphic looks at Phos-chek, a fire retardant which contains ammonium phosphates or sulfates as the active ingredient. The red colour comes from iron(III) oxide. While Phos-Chek only causes mild skin and eye irritation for humans, it’s hazardous to aquatic organisms. When applied in front of wildfires, Phos-Chek forms phosphate esters which form a protective char that slows wildfires’ spread.

On #NationalCherryDay, here’s a look at the chemistry behind cherries’ poisonous pits and the chemical differences between sweet and sour cherries 🍒 www.compoundchem.com/2016/07/21/c... #ChemSky 🧪
This Compound Interest infographic explains the chemistry behind sweet and sour cherries. Anthocyanins like cyanidin-3-o-rutinoside and cyanidin-3-glucosylrutinoside determine cherry color. Tartness results from malic acid, with sour cherries having a lower pH of 3.1–3.6 compared to 3.7–4.5 for sweet cherries. Furthermore, cherry pits contain amygdalin, which releases poisonous hydrogen cyanide when digested, with concentrations varying between cherry types.

"The Chemistry" section uses chemical equations to illustrate CO2 reacting with water to form carbonic acid, which dissociates into hydrogen, bicarbonate, and carbonate ions.
