📺Watch back: Dr Gerard McCarthy, an oceanographer working in @icarus-maynooth.bsky.social , appeared on the Sáile documentary on @tg4.bsky.social this week. (appears 26:00 to 31:00) www.tg4.ie/en/player/pl...
A man and a woman are having a conversation on a boat. The man is wearing a black jacket with a logo and gesturing with his hands. The woman, wearing a light grey cap and a dark sweater, is listening attentively. They are seated in front of a white life preserver, with a serene lake and green hills in the background. The TG4 logo is displayed in the top right corner.

They found upper ocean density differences explained more of the trend in RAPID than deep ocean densities. Last year, we looked at signal and noise in the RAPID data and found the lowest layers the best place to look for a trend. I don't think these results contradict but add pieces to the puzzle.

This seems to point to an important role for AABW but is probably more indicative of the mass compensation applied to the calculation. I was thinking about this yesterday when looking through this study by Pita et al. assets-eu.researchsquare.com/files/rs-889...

Why is it not exactly 1:1? Antarctic Intermediate water is missing from the warm water, left this out because its primarily an eastern boundary water mass. And Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) is missing from the cold water masses. This is more interesting as there is a bias here.

What goes up must come down. The AMOC at RAPID 26N in the North Atlantic is a balance of net northward flowing warm, shallow water (Gulf Stream, Ekman/wind, Thermocline) and southward flowing cold, deep water (upper and lower North Atlantic Deep Water). The dashed line is 1:1.

A problem with social media is the paradox of connection, where connections are abundant but ultimately not very deep. In order to know someone well you need to spend time with them often, ideally the old-fashioned way, by turning them into an animal familiar cursed to accompany you for all eternity

A person in a yellow waterproof jacket holds a vertical rope densely covered with mussels, suspended over a misty body of water. Multiple mussel-covered ropes hang nearby, indicating a mussel farming operation. The foggy background reveals a distant shoreline, suggesting a coastal aquaculture setting.

What is going on with the AMOC - the system of ocean currents that gives Ireland its mild and wet climate? With a number of iCRAG colleagues we wrote a short piece for @rtebrainstorm.bsky.social ➡️ www.rte.ie/brainstorm/2...

Is the Atlantic ocean's "wobble" a warning for Ireland?
The Atlantic between Ireland and Canada, which gives us our mild climate, is behaving strangely and is the only location on the earth's surface that has cooled

That would be really interesting. Somebody must have done experiments on Atlantic circulation with the Med open and closed too I guess. It's an important question to know how much extra deep warming in the Atlantic is due to AMOC and has implications for GMST

Definitely thinking of your work @janzika.bsky.social when thinking of ocean vertical heat transport.
120
Gerard McCarthy @germac.bsky.social · 22/08/2025
I often come back to the Atlantic being warmer than the Pacific at depth. At shallower depths, it seems obvious that the warm water is coming from the Med. But also the vertical heat transport due to overturning processes needs to be remembered. Anyone know of study partitioning those two processes?
