Developed at the same time, or around the same time are fine. All settings are just part of the game, they are there for a reason, ports developed much later and with enhancements are remasters in all but name.

This is why remakes are a very multifaceted issue, because at that point the issue is less direct replacement and more the ideology on graphics that I think is flawed, the desire for 'upgraded' visuals in the first place, I think if people treated games better, you'd just have the port side.

It's fine if you like these games, hell there are some remasters that I do enjoy more because of the gameplay changes, but I would never try intellectualise that. It is okay to like your video game junk food, just don't try cram every single game ever into these easy to play modern boxes. Please.

This doesn't feel like caring about restoration or preservation at all, it feels like intellectualising your own personal discomfort over what you view to be clunky controls or muddy visuals. To make people feel smart for consuming the safest, least challenging version of a work possible.

Another issue I have with this argument is that there are actual real game restoration efforts being made, that don't seek to replace, just actually restore. Whether it be developing better emulators or talented developers fixing up busted ports to work better on modern hardware.

Remakes are like looking at a painting, and then opening up a modern digital art software and drawing something kinda similar and then calling it the improved version. Neither of these cases restore anything, they at best exist alongside the original.

To compare the changes in technology and game design philosophy to the very literal decay of real world objects is deeply bizarre. A remaster is not akin to touching up a damaged painting, it's like if you took a complete painting and started drawing things you like better over it.

The idea that something like the RE4HD project (as passionately made as it was) could be restoration is simply wrong. There was never an RE4 that looked like that, had those models, had that lighting, that geometry. It isn't recovering what was once there, it is imagining a game that never existed.

Old games are not allowed to have artistic decisions informed by the technology, the technology must necessarily be a strain on the game. No game could actually mean to look like that, it must just be held back. Resolution, aspect ratio, and framerate can never be seen as part of a game's identity.

Almost all works of art are inherently compromised from the initial vision, especially video games which require large teams, they are the compromised visions of countless people. There is no one true idea of what a game should be floating in someone's mind that we've previously failed to capture.
