Robert Forman Guthrie 'went out to France in July 1916... On 9 August 1916, he was killed in action by machine-gun fire leading his company. His body was never recovered and identified from the battlefield.' georgefergusonliverpool.wordpress.com/2026/09/29/2...

'Although the minimum age to serve abroad was 19, Arthur left for France on 12 Dec 1915 at the age of 16. Life in Bolton in 1917 must have been very exciting because this story only made it to page 3 of the newspaper. The airman's only weapon of defence was a pair of nail scissors, he sang ‘Two Eyes of Grey' to a leopard, and baboons fought over his clothing

ELLIS – In memory of Private R. A. (Arthur) Ellis (K.L.R.), who made the supreme sacrifice August 9, 1916. (Fondly remembered.) – Blod. georgefergusonliverpool.wordpress.com/2026/09/23/2...
Part of an official record – a descriptive return of a soldier in the Denbighshire Hussars Yeomanry Squadron who wanted a transfer to the Liverpool Scottish for the purpose of joining and serving with that battalion. The record was for Private R. A. Ellis, number 1389, who had served at that point for two months, since 10 June 1915 and was signed up for the duration of the war. He was 34 years and 184 days old, he was 5 foot 11.5 inches tall, his chest girth when fully expanded was 35 inches.

Benjamin Cook was reburied in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery. Many of those reburied with him were unknown British soldiers, whose regiments had been identified by their numerals, clothing or cap badge, buried with the inscription ‘Known unto God’. georgefergusonliverpool.wordpress.com/2026/09/15/1...

Alf Bevan enlisted while in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and therefore appears on the Canadian National War Memorial as well as the Scottish National War Memorial. He arrived in France on Christmas Eve 1915 and was killed on the Somme on 9 August 1916. georgefergusonliverpool.wordpress.com/2026/09/04/4...

George Ball was born in 1897 to a single mother. By the time he was 14 he was employed as a mill worker in Leyland. On 9 August 1916, at the age of 19, he died of wounds received in action. He is remembered on the Leyland War Memorial. georgefergusonliverpool.wordpress.com/2026/09/02/2...

The end of a disastrous month for the Liverpool Scottish – 152 were killed or died during August 1916. Most have no known grave but are remembered on the Thiepval Memorial. George had been badly injured and would spend months in hospital. georgefergusonliverpool.wordpress.com/2026/08/31/3...

John William Meehan played football for Darwen FC, signed for Brentford in 1913, then played for Stalybridge Celtic FC before enlisting in the Liverpool Scottish. He was wounded on 9 Aug and died of his wounds on this day in 1916. georgefergusonliverpool.wordpress.com/2026/08/19/1...

Rex Kingsley was wounded and taken prisoner during the attack at Guillemont. He was treated in the Prisoners’ Hospital, St Quentin by nuns who had no medical facilities. The hospital consequently had high mortality and he died a few days later. georgefergusonliverpool.wordpress.com/2026/08/18/1...
