Yeah, the lack of that self awareness in the joke why these dudes always come off so bad
A meme of Ralph Wiggum telling his parents that "I was at the gym and the women were showing their butts and I saw one of the butts and the butt looked at me."

This is a moral atrocity and it needs to be loudly condemned as such. There is a reason that democracies *don't* do publicly televised executions (and why many don't execute people at all): it inculcates and rewards bloodthirst, which corrupts the spirit and corrodes the foundation of the polity.

It's a simultaneous fascination with California's ability to turn any seemingly well meaning group into NIMBYs

Also because Tom Cruise is pro cult I'm willing to accept him in a serious role but I don't like being pitched him having fun. Once again I haven't seen the film I was just forced to see the trailer when trying to watch the Odyssey and I resent that
010
George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 04/10/2026
I wonder if this is because the trailer was on the Odyssey for a lot of people and that trailer did it no favors

Exactly, and if the choice is now to accept any dog because a law says dog owners no longer have to be responsible for their choice of dog, landlords will make the choice to exit the market (or just stop renting to any pet owners)

George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 01/10/2026
Having a large dog is a choice and people need to be willing to accept the responsibilities of that choice.

I meant "riders" obviously but bus rivers is what we actually need
030
George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 29/09/2026
Because actual riders do not want it. They want more and better service. Even the lowest income riders are not complaining about cost, but they are about service and safety. The point where free transit even becomes debatable is so far off when Metro is this cheap and needs better service.
030
George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 29/09/2026
Los Angeles Metro has done several rider surveys, one which shows 43% of bus rivers were making below 15k/year and their main concern was still frequent service and cost did not even rank as a concern.

I agree with you, I was only pointing out the "roads are free so transit should be" isn't really true. The per trip cost isn't as salient to drivers and that's a problem, but there is a cost.
111
George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 29/09/2026
I get the impulse here, we have a system built for cars so transit should be welfare for those without cars. That's probably true in some cities (Tucson the usual example) but in other places it can and should be a primary means of transit, and free transit doesn't make sense
010
George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 29/09/2026
That's the point though, he did it knowing about transit, in the highest transit city, Bass is doing it because "seems like people eat this free transit stuff up"

Or even if they spend 20 mil on enforcement, like 10 cops per shift trying to patrol the entirety of New York City

George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 29/09/2026
Imagine the disaster if one year the MTA only took in 8 mil, lol

I think fuel taxes/tolls should be higher but the idea that "roads are free so should transit" in the sense that you don't have to put up some money to use them doesn't really make sense. Gas tax, registration fees, license fees, there's a requirement (that should be higher) but it's not nothing
100
George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 29/09/2026
You have to pay at least hundreds, usually thousands of dollars to legally operate a car on the roads.

I had a job installing stuff in restaurants. Any vaguely country restaurant puts on Spotify and it plays this song 100 times a day. It was wild. It would play like every 5th song.

Or even just a different tone. This is why I think BCS is a better show. The characters are unique but they all get to take turns being the exciting one.
000
George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 26/09/2026
I agree, it's a good perspective, a well written and very well acted character. This isn't my take originally. I can't find the original post but basically it pointed out her character's arrival signaled the episode was going to be a slower one.
110
George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 25/09/2026
It was mostly just dudes being awful, but I think there is legitimate criticism that the way her character was written meant her storylines slowed the overall plot down, which could be annoying in such a big-plot-point show.

There is "Peppermint stick", it's a favorite of mine but it's harder to find. I think it's more popular in the northeast.

There is a good podcast about it called "Sold a Story". But basically it was conservatives saying "this rejection of phonics seems like woke nonsense" but in this one instance they were actually right. But that meant it was more blue states falling behind the red

I think a lot of the pushback could be mitigated if it was just done as a charitable donation, maybe even matched by the company
000
George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 20/09/2026
People do it because drawing associations is satisfying to that pattern matching part of human brains, but slurs are the laziest, least clever form of that, and they are incapable of making any clever, more accurate associations, and unable to go without one
000
George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 20/09/2026
I think people use the trajectory of words like "idiot" to justify current slur use. But the problem with using slurs is assigning behavior you don't like to a particular group. Being foolish? "Well you must be an r-word because they are foolish" instead of just talking about the behavior
010
George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 20/09/2026
Yeah the difference is seeing behavior you don't like and instead of addressing it directly you think "what group is associated with that behavior" and using a slur for that group. But actually just addressing the behavior is easy, there's no reason to bring the slur into it.

This is especially insane given that the related helicopter crash will be fully investigated by the NTSB and based on those findings changes may result, and yet with the car crash we're just gonna say "oh the driver was drunk, better luck next time"

A copy machine has to store the number of copies you asked for, that doesn't mean it thinks. AIs are language models so when they need to store information it's in language. Being made of words isn't what makes something a thought.

What is the measure of "the economy" that you think it's still connected to then?
010
George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 14/09/2026
For a long time sentiment went up and down, high and low, right along with measured economic data. Then all of a sudden it didn't. So your theorizing about propaganda is kinda the point Will is making. Let's admit that happened and now discuss what the case is.
160
George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 14/09/2026
Will is trying to convince people who might be interested in the existence of this anomaly, but frequently people react like he's trying to convince the general public they are wrong somehow
040
George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 14/09/2026
Or there's something that was never being measured but only recently changed, but then the question would still be "what is that thing?"
010
George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 13/09/2026
The building 7 thing is so funny because they are the only ones who even remember it fell. I imagine this conspiracy planning where it goes "well the public isn't going to be outraged unless building 7 is also destroyed"

Parking and getting out is it's own mental muscle. I noticed this when I had to drive a lot for work. If I went too long driving only point A to B it made me reluctant to stop along the way. But if I was in a place of getting in and out a lot another stop didn't bother me.
000
George Coffey @georgecoffey.com · 09/09/2026
No you're correct, I didn't notice that. It still begs the question why a blender render took a vacation on a VHS before returning to a computer
