I mean just look at him, absolutely glorious. There are two all-time iconic TOTP performances in this poll, both from 1986 and this is the first.

Aside from Word Up being insanely good in every way, I also want Cameo to win the poll so we get to see Larry resplendent in his red codpiece in the PPP banner for the next month.

One of the things I love about this brief era is the dominance of female voices in UK rap. Derek was deservedly an also-ran.

Labour is a transphobic party. The Greens are a racist party. The Lib Dems are neither but are absolutely awful NIMBYs. What a time to be a liberal in Britain.

The "zionism is racism" motion that has just passed on the Green Party's conference floor is truly gross, and deeply racist. The party's MPs deserve some credit for opposing it, though they should've done so more stridently and sooner. This is now a millstone around the party's necks. Deservedly.

The "Zionism is racism" motion, to be debated at the Green Party conference tomorrow, will not advance the Palestinian cause one inch. But, if adopted, it would marginalise and discredit the party. There are powerful ways to confront the genocide. Toxic gesture politics isn't one of them.

They aren’t as flimsy as they look, I’ve had my bike in one in London in a relatively high crime area for 12 years with expensive bikes in and it’s never been broken into, and not heard of any nearby that have either

It's nuts, I'm white and my heritage is entirely Scottish / Irish, I'm white and born in England but under her weird made up rules I'm not English? or does the 'going back generations' thing only apply if you're non-white?

I listened to all four eligible Pointer albums (two group, two solo) in the hope of finding a hidden gem but sadly it was not to be

I really should know that by now, thank you

Geoff @geoffdeburca.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

62 tracks, which are the 2 not-on-spotify?

Geoff @geoffdeburca.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

It would be but that's already been flagged (and Tom hasn't released the playlist for '88 yet anyway)

Geoff @geoffdeburca.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

(I would 100% be up for an all-Latino / Hispanic poll at some point though)

I love Expose and this track but are any of them black?

Trans athletes are a tiny % of all athletes. Fewer than 10 out of >500k US college athletes identify as trans. I don’t hear anything abt them haze raping. Yet, 1 in 5 women will be raped during their time in college. How about bitching against frat houses who drug & gang rape women & get away w/it?

Rein Me In by Sam Fender & Olivia Dean. It’s spent 23 weeks (non-consecutively) at number 1 this year, and has had 49 weeks in the top 10 since 2025. It’s also now the joint longest running number one in Ireland. I’ve just listened to it for the first time and I don’t think I’d heard it before.

Yeah this is surely the only answer (alongside a quid pro quo of tolling bridges to help keep the fund topped up maybe)

We have a uk equivalent this year as we’ve had the longest running number one single of all time, and I’ve never knowingly heard it

Can’t believe I forgot about this but for ‘88 We Call It Acieeed, banned by the beeb at the height of the acid house moral panic

it is her best ballad I think

Milli Vanilli instead?! Feels like that is more justifiable

Nitro Deluxe is a classic early house record, we're also missing Risse's House Train. Almaz, Don't Make Me Wait also great shouts

I swapped Follow The Leader out at the last minute for something more obscure and sort of regretting it

I was tempted to nominate the JB's Doing Our Own Dang for a similar reason to Buddy as it captures all of them. Monie & Latifah are definitely both in the bonuses, can't remember if I saw JBs or ATCQ

030

I Just Can't Stop Loving You was a UK number 1 and allows us to dilute the Jacko with extra Siedah

What a great list. I'm sure some of these are in the bonuses already but: Rap: NWA, Walk this Way, Tone Loc House: Jack Your Body, Ten City, Royal House, Adeva R&B: Allyson Williams, Whitney Brits: Mica Paris, Five Star Soul: Luther Vandross

I feel like Can You Party is just as good / as historically important so hope that makes it on too

So glad to see Keith Sweat get a main

Yes and not only were gay rights an issue in the 80s, the LGSM story (the story now being dramtised again in Pride at the National Theatre) shows you can build a bridge between trad Labour and urban progressivism. They are not mutually exclusive.

Now that Grandpa's Party has another selection can i change my 1989 Bonus to Adeva - Respect please? (probably should have gone for that in the first place as my biggest ever success was choosing the Aretha version in the Covers poll) @peoples-pop-polls.bsky.social

(Opposites Attract would have worked, as both of the Wild Pair, and MC Skat Kat are black)

I'm more annoyed by Unpolled 'Keep on Moving' missing out to 'Back to Life' for the Soul II Soul choice

These four years are the period I properly discovered music and the period I probably spent the most time listening, and I was listening almost exclusively to R&B, House, Hop-Hop, Soul and Black Pop. I changed my list 3 times today alone! Too many choices.

To The Batmobile is a CHOOOOOOOON
