I'm always irrationally excited to read new work by Jeff Young @wildtwin.bsky.social, so the arrival of the much anticipated 'Latchkey' has put a proper smile on my face. #booksky #Iamreading

It’s a year since Wild Twin won the TLS Ackerley Prize. This evening at Foyles I get to open the envelope and announce this year’s winner. Hopefully they’re not like this idiot and they remember to pay the cheque into their bank account.

I stand emotionally defenceless before these songs. Nearly 40 years of listening and still nothing can disassemble me any quicker. “The temptation To take the precious things we have apart To see how they work Must be resisted for they never fit together again”

Bowland - where your vocabulary searches out words that mean lonely.

A view along a wire fence and parallel, saturated, rough path. The fence and path stretch into a featureless grass moorland rising to a low hill under a cloudy sky.

I've lived in lots of houses, lots of places, but I don't think I've ever lived in a detached house - no neighbours. I'm only just coming to terms with how loud I can crank up the music when I'm here alone, it's curiously effective at rolling back the years, and at 70 that's something of a blessing.

Things I saw from the highway today: Mist rising from irrigation canals The new sun like a furious eye between lids of cloud A crow perched on a warning sign, indifferent to what it might portend A white egret in a ditch Two dark coyotes trotting across a sunrise pasture

Golden early sun on a line of low grass hills, under a blanket of low grey cloud.

Bright golden sunrise and a band of butter-yellow sky under a thick bank of grey clouds. Below, a multi-lane highway with one box truck passing, headlights on.

Golden light on grass hills topped with pylons and wind turbines, with heavy grey fog drifting across the yellow-blue sky.

Now's the time of testing. Deny the training miles, stay home where it's warm and dry? Or choose the winter path, see beauty in free-coursing water and look through veils of rain. #running #cumbria

Ribbons of rain blow up a steep sided valley of trees and open fells. Low sun lights up a road and a river making them shine silver.
