The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel, we see a pair of ghosts. The first ghost says, “Let us make love, my darling.”
In the second panel, we see see the second ghost’s face, blushing. It says, “Here? In public?”
In the third panel, we again see the pair of ghosts together. The first one says, “No one can see us, we’re ghosts!”
In the fourth panel, the title reads “the cat”. We see a cat looking up at them.

I hope you get to keep him because he's so great. BUT. If he gets traded, I hope he goes to the Blue Jays.

Have some chilorio simmering in the oven, watching the Brewers and Padres battle it out in the best series so far, going to make some bowls with little cats on them, thinking about how the new Murderbot book has dropped me in the middle of the story.

The two teams I am now cheering for most in the post season are facing each other. I guess I am cheering for the Brewers the most, but sigh.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

You probably don't need any more suggestions, but we have continued to talk about this question in the family, and wonder if the first few Adrian Mole books might fit the bill as well. They are quite funny.

I just canvassed the family, and they like all the suggestions made here but further suggested the Discworld books and some of Mary Roach's are very funny (especially the space one) but not sure they would fall under memoir.

I don’t know who wrote the captions for the Emmys red carpet coverage on the Guardian, but they’re spectacular
Screenshot of a photo from the Emmys red carpet with the following caption:

Florence Pugh in a pastel Barbie dream dress with a slightly confusing off-the-shoulder train situation and the slightly spiky up-do of a mean girl at the prom in an early 2000s movie. It's excellent.Screenshot of a photo from the Emmys red carpet with the following caption:

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.
