Yes. When $17 billion/year of taxpayer money is going to financially secure seniors, we are indeed blaming inefficient spending on OAS for underinvestment in younger generations. This is just the GROWTH in spending:

We have posted the clawback rates previously but our point is that financially secure seniors shouldn't be receiving government cash subsidies while other seniors (and children) live in poverty.

Young people are leaving Canada because they cant afford rent. But sure....let's keep giving millionaires thousanda of $$ in OAS (a program designed in the 1950s to help poor seniors).

Yes, but our plan would create the biggest cost savings to the federal government in history! $17billion/year is currently being sent to households with incomes above $100,000/year. All we would have to do is lower their payments slightly to eliminate ALL seniors' poverty. www.gensqueeze.ca/fix_oas

Who pays for OAS? It's not a pension, like CPP. So Old Age Security is mainly paid for by YOUNGER GENERATIONS!!! This is inefficient spending Canada!!!!

Even the financial advisors think it's wrong for a couple with that much income and assets to be collecting Old Age Security!

What is happening Canada?!?!?! Old Age Security was designed in the 1950s when poverty rates for seniors were the highest of any age group. It was meant to help those in NEED!!!

We have VERY lengthy policy reports on our website. Looking to you AND other experts is key! But the hard truth is that without changes to OAS (savings of $17billion/year under our plan) experts like you and those on the front lines will continue to lack funds needed to create such systems reform.

Generation Squeeze @gensqueeze.ca · 24/09/2026
Lots of options for reform! In the end we believe all Canadians want the same thing: A Canada that works for all generations and leaves nobody in poverty.
100
Generation Squeeze @gensqueeze.ca · 24/09/2026
OAS reform could include refining OAS regulations to subtract reasonable medical expenses from the income threshold after which OAS subsidies are clawed back, while we reduce that income threshold to better align with the CCB.
100
Generation Squeeze @gensqueeze.ca · 24/09/2026
Our point is that we shouldn’t leave the ineffective design of OAS as is just to compensate for failures of long-term care policies. Let’s fix the latter in its own policy space, while ALSO fixing OAS. Both of them together will act to serve income security objectives in retirement.

We didn't mean to suggest SM isn't a place to debate. Just not an ideal space for the nuances of policy reform discussion due to limited word count and time required to go back and forth but here's a short thread that might help?....

Generation Squeeze @gensqueeze.ca · 18/09/2026
And you're aware of this?
100
Generation Squeeze @gensqueeze.ca · 18/09/2026
So if we understand correctly, you are in favour of keeping OAS income thresholds the same and continuing to send $18,000/year to financially secure seniors in order for those funds to be used to pay for long term care costs thus avoiding their children having to do home care for them?
100
Generation Squeeze @gensqueeze.ca · 18/09/2026
Our point is that it doesn't make sense to send $17billion/year in income supports to financially secure seniors while 400,000 seniors (and 800,000 children) live in poverty. Could you elaborate on your point a bit more?
100
Generation Squeeze @gensqueeze.ca · 18/09/2026
Correct. Income from OAS is taxable. We're confused about the point you are making? Could you clarify?
100
Generation Squeeze @gensqueeze.ca · 18/09/2026
You are correct! Long term care is expensive so is getting older in general! That's why our plan to fix Old Age Security would totally eliminate poverty for all seniors in Canada! (BTW: That only costs about $2billion/year, so imagine what we could do with the other $15.5 billion)

Thank you! The good news is that the savings would be so big we could help young and old alike! We're asking that some of it be diverted to eliminate poverty for all 400,000 seniors. It's possible with just a small change:
