No grandparent would choose a system that leaves their grandchildren worse off. No government should either. www.gensqueeze.ca/end_anti_chi...

Yes. When $17 billion/year of taxpayer money is going to financially secure seniors, we are indeed blaming inefficient spending on OAS for underinvestment in younger generations. This is just the GROWTH in spending:

Generation Squeeze @gensqueeze.ca · 02/10/2026
We have posted the clawback rates previously but our point is that financially secure seniors shouldn't be receiving government cash subsidies while other seniors (and children) live in poverty.

Who pays for OAS? It's not a pension, like CPP. So Old Age Security is mainly paid for by YOUNGER GENERATIONS!!! This is inefficient spending Canada!!!!

Generation Squeeze @gensqueeze.ca · 01/10/2026
Even the financial advisors think it's wrong for a couple with that much income and assets to be collecting Old Age Security!

Generation Squeeze @gensqueeze.ca · 01/10/2026
What is happening Canada?!?!?! Old Age Security was designed in the 1950s when poverty rates for seniors were the highest of any age group. It was meant to help those in NEED!!!

Does this make ANY SENSE to anyone in Canada? Keep in mind there are 400,000 seniors and 800,000 children living in poverty in our country! Want change? Join us! #cdnpoli www.gensqueeze.ca/fix_oas

Excellent piece by Nicholas Aboagye in @ipolitics.bsky.social He warns of more young Canadians fleeing the country in search of affodability. The fix? Old Age Security reform. www.ipolitics.ca/2026/09/21/i... #cdnpoli #Canada

Turns out the data don't lie....the problem isn't entitlement. It's government budgets that prioritize spending on older generations. Want change? Read our most recent blog by GenSqueeze practicum student Michelle Wojciechowski. www.gensqueeze.ca/news #cdnpoli #GenZ #Canada #generationalfairness

Thanks for mentioning our success in educating the Canadian public on Old Age Security! It needs fixing ASAP to better target those in need and perhaps more importantly, save Canada $17billion/year (the amount currently going to financially secure retirees). www.gensqueeze.ca/fix_oas

As far as not being "very effective"....You may want to review our VERY LONG list of policy wins over the past decade. Have you heard of: $10aDay child care, Vancouver's empty homes tax, $4 billion in housing supports for young people in the national housing strategy... www.gensqueeze.ca/our_impact

And our analysis of the 2026 BC budget shows the same pattern as other provinces lead by Liberals and Conservatives: Spending priority is focused largely on those aged 65+ at the expense of younger generations: www.gensqueeze.ca/2026_bc_budg...

Thank you! The good news is that the savings would be so big we could help young and old alike! We're asking that some of it be diverted to eliminate poverty for all 400,000 seniors. It's possible with just a small change:

Canadian seniors have the lowest rate of poverty and the most wealth of any generation. Any increase in OAS should be targeted to those in need and should come from a decrease in OAS payments to those who are financially secure. www.gensqueeze.ca/fix_oas

We applaud the change to property tax deferral in BC but also encourage even more change that is needed immediately to return to generational fairness in Canada. Many thanks to Phill Webb for the content contribution. Please read his recent article on the topic: www.gensqueeze.ca/vancouver_su...

Education, hard work and savings are no longer enough for most young Canadians wishing to buy a home. (9/10)
The housing crisis has minted a generation of multi-millionaires. Meanwhile or youth question Canada's meritocracy. The most likely pathway to homeownership is now inheritance, not education or hard work.

Generation Squeeze @gensqueeze.ca · 19/08/2026
Young Canadians deserve housing policy change that is effective and significant. (8/10)
2 Millennials sitting at a desk with a laptop with worried expressions on their faces. Text reads: BC youth are rightfully discouraged with stagnating wages and record high housing prices. Meanwhile, government are using tax-payer dollars to protect homeowners' private investments.

Some argue the change doesn't go nearly far enough to make a meaningful change (7/10)
Photo of from the Council of Senior Citizens' Organizations of BC: 3 happy, healthy looking seniors outdoors on a tree-lined street going for a jog. Text reads: Some argue that latest reform doesn't go far enough. All other provinces exclude wealthy households from benefitting. But the Council of Seniors Organizations of BC is calling to reverse these reforms.

A small policy change but a step in the right direction... (6/10)
Pink background with black text that reads: BC NDP announces a long overdue reform in 2026. Older homeowners (age 55+) can continue to delay paying property taxes until the sale of their home. But now...interest on the "loan" will be set at the market rate (instead of the previous below prime rate).

That's a lot of multi-millionaires putting off paying their taxes! (5/10)
Photo of the Lions Gate bridge in Vancouver. Text reads: Because the province has not implemented any means testing, there were 9,887 homes in the city of Vancouver receiving this subsidy in 2024 and the average price of a home receiving the subsidy was valued at $3.35 million.

The subsidy made sense 50 years ago but in 2026 most of the beneficiaries are now multi-millionaires! (4/10)

Property tax deferral began in the 1970s to help house rich/cash poor seniors "retire in place". (3/10)
In 1973 BC began to provide a heavily subsidized loan to homeowners. At an interest rate below the Bank of Canada's prime rate, it is a generous benefit! It doesn't compound annually, and it is paid back with the tax-free proceeds from the sale of the home.

Did you know??? If you are over age 55 and a resident of BC you can defer paying municipal property taxes on your primary residence? (2/10)
Photo of an Asian elderly woman at a laptop with an expression of joy on her face. Text reads: Want to delay paying property taxes? Are you a resident of BC aged 55+? You're in luck! BC's government allows anyone over the age of 55 to defer paying municipal property taxes on their principal residence.

Not to mention, the stagnating salary has to be viewed in context with the most expensive personal budget item for anyone who didn't own a home by the 1990s: Rent/Down Payment/Mortgage. Here is a chart that shows the STRUGGLE!
