A few years ago Coke made an experimental line of Coke Zero espresso. Not sure if that was the actual name or something else. It sounds disgusting but was actually really really good. This needs to come back!

Checking prices for a laptop for kids college. A Mac Neo is around $500 with edu discount. This is about the same price as a pair of new tires for my car. How is it possible that tires cost the same as this incredibly sophisticated piece of equipment??

I recently watched a few episodes of the first season while coincidentally on a flight to Silicon Valley. Probably even funnier and scarily prescient than it was when it came out.

At some point we’re going to have to invent new formats. The current ones have terrible throughput. They were made for a world where a 5x genome was a luxury and gzip was compression gold.

@jesszafarris.com is there a word for the category of words that are derived from people’s names? I recently discovered the first quisling was a Quisling and that Mr Masoc was fond of pain. This led to a deep nerd-hole of discovery. There might be enough of these for a Words Unravelled episode?

Scientists discover brain switches that clear Alzheimer’s plaques

I wonder if this will involve “teaching” models this formal language or directly compiling into weights and connections? The former seems easier. The latter, way harder but possibly more powerful?
000
Mark Schreiber, PhD @genometron.bsky.social · 01/01/2026
It would be interesting to be able to understand how system prompts translate into “excitement” of weights in the model. Then it might be possible to compile a more structured prompt into adjusted weights? Maybe closer to actual engineering than the hit and miss suggestions we use now.

Mark Schreiber, PhD @genometron.bsky.social · 01/01/2026
Very true, although system prompts are written in natural language and not code. Developing them feels more like negotiation than coding.
