I just learned that is the widely accepted pronunciation in the UK — because I saw a bunch of UK people in TikTok comments CORRECTING someone who pronounced it the American (original/standard) way. They were even spelling out “bore-ben” thinking they were being helpful 😭

right, a technical is supposed to strip away all the fripperies and judge baking fundamentals. it levels the playing field. this was a fun challenge but not a technical.

I worked with him & knew him well in the 90s on many fundraisers. He was a titan for local AIDS causes among other important Queer political movements that he championed. He was one in a million. Sad loss but his impact is undeniable for many. RIP good and smart man.

this is very sad in many ways. It’s not like there is a thriving network of independent, editorial podcast studios in Canada. Canadaland was once a very promising part of our media landscape. Now Jesse Brown seems very unwell and the whole sector is falling into decay

if you use it in a recipe calling for kosher salt you may die

genna @genna.bsky.social · 12h
CANADIAN LISTEN TO ME!!! heed my warning!!! The kosher salt from Bulk Barn is not kosher salt!! it is LOOKS like kosher salt, and has the texture of kosher salt, but it is at least twice as salty as typical kosher salt. It is saltier than iodized table salt (which is ~2x saltier than typical kosher)

It’s about $4.99 a can here (Toronto), or £2.63. a pie pumpkin or squash is a little less than half that price! Would be interested to see what it costs where you are!

I actually baked a butternut squash and used that! pumpkin puree costs an arm and a leg now, even here in the land of pumpkin patches!

Made this last weekend for a practical magic themed party! I cut the sugar but it think it would be good as written. Didn’t use any mix ins and made an almond glaze. It makes a LOT, you can bake in a cake pan www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/easy...

We absolutely should be horrified by reports of planned public executions and see them as an overt re-embrace of spectacle lynchings--while also understanding that the story of the "modern" death penalty in this country is inextricable from that history, rooted in racial violence & white supremacy.

At the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama, the historical link between lynching and the death penalty is hard to miss.

went looking for info on the last Canadian executions. This was the protest outside the Don Jail that day in 1962. By then capital punishment was rare and unpopular, but Canada executed a similar number of people between Confederation and abolition as the United States has in the past half-century.
People protest against capital punishment outside Toronto's Don Jail on the night of December 10, 1962, shortly before the executions of Arthur Lucas and Ronald Turpin.

the cemetery where I walk my dog has Irena, whose grave always has a fresh new Diet Pepsi or Diet Coke (and also has a cola-scented candle). She died in 2012, when she was just 65. Her devotion to fridge cigarettes will echo down the generations, and I have a feeling she was the life of the office.

beyond products are super tasty. By far, the best vegetarian counterpart to a fast food burger/fish stick/sausage. But they are an alternative to junk foods and treats, not everyday staple foods.

I’ve been vegetarian twice as long as Beyond has existed. vegetarians care a lot about value for money. We are make beans in the instant pot! Few of us are going to spring for one $9 pound of ground round very often. We’re also health conscious. These products are high in sodium and saturated fat

“Beyond Meat has spent much of its history engaged in ‘a truly epic marketing battle’ with the meat industry.” They seem very determined to sell to people who don’t want their product. I wonder what market research they’ve done on vegetarians (their actual customers)

OK. You turned 50. You know you’re supposed to get a colonoscopy. But you haven’t. Here are your reasons: 1. You’ve been busy. 2. You don’t have a history of cancer in your family.
