My absence is on purpose. Graduate school applications have opened up, so I've been getting that sorted out. (But of course, I will merely just be drawing and posting quietly for some unspecified amount of time. I have to save the yap for alumni/profs/future mentor(s), you know?)

I love how “crawl through glass” here isn’t even hyperbole. it’s something that’s literally happening in the story. It’s the blade. The flower petal represents the blood Lara shed with every inch she crawled forward all for Mari. Girl literally let herself be stabbed by thousands of swords for Mari.

Relatedly: "Lara is class S, which makes it not queer" is also a take I've now seen from a presumably real person who claims to have researched queer culture in Japan

it is extremely funny hearing people doom about mari and lara separating forever and then lara is just going to live basically two trains stops away. i support dramatic clingy mari chasing the train tearfully as her gf goes...twenty of god's precious minutes down the road

For my non-anime followers: Sayonara Lara is a queer story. Explicitly so, subtextually so, and in a lot of different ways. Highly recommend.

The 'wow!! a gundam!!' meme, but wherein the viewer calls Goodbye, Lara yuribait as the message 'Fairytales have toxic and prescriptive endings that preempt the agency and choices of female characters, even and especially queer ones' flies over their head. Then they say 'kiss already!!'.

Maybe I'm just stupid or Little Mermaid-pilled or something, but the ending of Goodbye, Lara is in direct dialog with the intentions of Anderson in regards to his original story. He didn't believe in the mermaid being given her soul by someone else but having the agency earn it on her own

If you didn't like the SayoLara ending but your first instinct is to post gripes rather than open that word doc and start writing the fic where Lara comes back and lives with Mari gayly then you haven't achieved moksha. Free yourself of kleshas. You can still find enlightenment.

sorry i have a lot to say about much of the symbolism and metaphor and subnarrative of lara but i really do not wanna comment on it much because it is so so close to home and the way a lot of people talk about it hurts like. me. personally. specifically. lmao

The perfect closure to the trans themes really is having Luca's little "brother" finally be awed by one piece of Luca's art: the image of a fully transitioned Lara. #sayonaralara

sayonara lara spoilers I do think it's important to remember that the aspect of queerness (broadly) Lara is specifically about IS comphet. (NOT talking about the prominent transgender allegories present too rn) it's about turning your back on what society/your family expects of you

Some people might dislike the ending of Goodbye Lara, but frankly, given Lara's trauma and experiences up til' now the choice she made at the end was pretty in line with her character (200 fanfics of yearning, poor Mari)

good luck mari

mari and lara from goodbye lara kissing. grace is in gon-chan form at the side and saying "Finally."

the next panel, where lara excitedly asks mari "What colour do you think our baby will be?", to which mari says "WHAT?"

lara continues, "You know, when you find your true love and babies start coming out of clam shells", beside her is a drawing of a hypothetical mermaid baby that looks like mari in a clam shell

mari stares at lara in disbelief, who says "Did your parents not tell you this yet?? Oh No!!"

My ships kiridare and fuyubana are between teen girls longing for the other in the throes of death games. This contrasts heavily with laramari, a ship between teen girls longing for the other as mermaid & human society is threaten w/ extinction bc of the ferocity unrequited love brings. Literally.

rotating in my head the reveal that mermaid princesses sustain the existence of mermaid society through the social-reproductive labour of producing the light that is (assumed to only come from) compulsory heterosexuality. this show & jaadugar unite as one
