Even when it’s “over”, it’s not over. I’m tired of explaining why I’m still having health issues. I’m over the Google experts who know more about my health than I do. I’m tired of expectations from others. I’m tired from having cancer and surviving. I didn’t ask for any of this.

People assume you aren't sick unless they see the sickness on your skin like scars forming a map of all the ways you're hurting. — Emm Roy #MaskingEffect #LifeAfterCancer #MS
Illustrated journal-style graphic titled “Beautifully Unavailable — Entry 1.” At the top left is a stylized illustration of a woman with long curly hair and a large pink bow, looking downward in a pink satin robe. The background is soft pink and cream with dark brown vintage typewriter-style text.

The text reflects on the invisible nature of chronic illness, explaining that someone can appear coherent and present outwardly while privately struggling to function. It describes chronic illness as a “split-screen reality” where external appearance and physical reality no longer match. The final paragraph shares the feeling of being absent from one’s own life for months while still appearing inside of it, ending with the line: “Wondering why my body won’t be kind to me.”

The piece is signed “Jessica Edmond” in the bottom right corner.

The body remembers grief and trauma in physical ways. Simple things like a certain smell or day of the year can be triggers that bring you back to that moment in your body. Anecdotally I think it also remembers times, like noon, night, midnight etc. Remember to take deep breaths and drink water.

MLK was only 39 when he was killed. Growing up, I thought that was old. But I’m 43 now and I’m stunned by the burden he shouldered at such a young age. I’m also a lot more aware of how hard it is, at any age, to carry the hopes and dreams of an oppressed people on your shoulders, as so many do.
