You ARE Canada's Special Agent Cooper
Screencap of TV show Twin Peaks. A smiling FBI Special Agent Cooper, with a slice of pice, sits at a diner counter with another man. The waitress's torso is visible in the foreground, on the other side of the counter. The subtitle says, "This pie's so good it is a crime (This pie's so good it is a crime)" No idea why it repeats the dialog.

Something I realized a few issues into Top 10: Jeff Smax is pretty much a color photo negative of Tom Strong!

The design began with a military/SWAT inspired shoulder holster and rappelling hip webbing. Alan Moore said Smax has blue skin, so I wanted to show maximum skin (tho pants that match his skin tone). I needed a color break, so white arm gloves as a "shrug." Finally, I love 90s Robin's 2 tone cape!

As the Democratic mayor of Chicago, Rahm hated meeting with everyday Chicagoans. Unless they were very wealthy and hopefully GOP aligned. Emanuel is one of those Democrats I describe as a "billionaire whisperer", and also a wannabe Republican. chicagoreader.com/news/the-may...
Screenshot of a Chicago Reader article at the link, about Rahm Emanuel's refusal to meet with everyday Chicagoan citizen groups, but eagerness to listen to millionaires and billionaires:

Chicago Reader
Chicago’s alternative newsroom
NEWS & POLITICS CITY LIFE MUSIC VISUAL ARTS PERFORMING ARTS BOOKS

Last September, after submitting a FOIA request and badgering mayoral aides for weeks, we received copies of the first months of Emanuel’s daily schedule. We reported in October that it was filled with rich guys who also happened to be some of the mayor’s big-money donors.

This time we asked for the next three months of the calendar: September, October, and November of 2011—a period when GOP presidential candidates battling for the nomination were railing against the White House.

The mayor’s office didn’t respond to our request to discuss Emanuel’s schedule. But once again, we found that his days were loaded with rich guys, campaign donors, powerful contractors, union busters, charter-school supporters, City Hall insiders, aldermanic brownnosers, and other favor seekers.

[Ad]

But during these three months Emanuel found time for another type of visitor: major funders of conservative attacks on President Obama. As such, the mayor’s calendar offers a glimpse of what passes for bipartisanship in Chicago—and shows the ways in which wealth and access, at least as much as party identity or ideology, have come to command the attention of politicians, leaving everyday people out of the conversation.

For instance, on September 1 Emanuel met for an hour with Muneer Satter, a managing director at Goldman Sachs. Satter donated $190,000 last year to Restore Our Future, a Romney-affiliated PAC, and he’s sent tens of thousands more to top congressional Republicans fighting to slash federal programs and regulations. Yet Goldman Sachs isn’t averse to taking money from governments predominated by Democrats: the city of…

How a well-intended California domestic violence law results in victims being arrested

GUEST COMMENTARY

On Valentine’s Day weekend, my ex-boyfriend assaulted me and threatened to kill me. He’s 440 pounds and 6-foot-6. I’m 137 pounds and a foot shorter. But when I called the local police department, they arrested me instead.

Never mind my injuries. Never mind the overwhelming size difference. Never mind the clear evidence of assault — the open beer can my ex threw at my head, the knife he thrust at me, demanding I stab him in the heart.

None of it mattered.

Under the California Penal Code, officers must make an arrest in domestic violence cases when they determine probable cause. Enacted in 1986, this specific provision was meant to protect victims.

The problem? The law assumes officers are trained to identify the dominant aggressor, but research shows that training gaps and the code’s mandatory arrest provision often pressures them into rushed, surface-level decisions. Experts say this creates too much room for error.

That night, the evidence seemed clear. Yet, the officer focused on a cut on my ex’s finger, and believed his claim that I was responsible. He ignored my statement that my ex had threatened me with a knife and cut himself.

He also ignored a textbook sign of domestic abuse: my ex confiscated car keys before attacking me, sneering, “Try to get to the airport now.” Coercive control is a widely recognized abuse tactic.

Instead, the officer charged me with “corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant” over the cut, and treated my attempts to retrieve the keys as a criminal act. The charge, a more serious offense than domestic battery, carries…FULL text of the article at the link, from which this screenshot is a short sample:

HOW X-MEN ’97 REVAMPS THE ADVENTURES OF CYCLOPS AND PHOENIX

Scott Summers/Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Nathan Summers in Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix #2
“Slym” (aka Scott Summers) and “Redd” (Jean Grey) raise their son Nathan in The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix #2.MARVEL

Complicated as this plot twist might sound, the story as it unfolds in the comics is even twistier. The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix, written by Scott Lobdell with art by Gene Ha, took the time-travel premise to its most metaphysical. In the six-issue series, published in 1994, Scott and Jean are brought into the future by Mother Askani — but seeing as their bodies could never theoretically make that trip, their consciousnesses are placed into new bodies, cloned from more recent descendants. Now known as Slym and Redd, Scott and Jean spend a short time with Nathan, training him in his powers, and eventually supporting him in his fight against Apocalypse.

Though they do get sent to their own time shortly after that massive battle, Scott and Jean’s impact on Nathan’s life is acutely felt. He goes on to amass more power not only as Cable, but theImage of some of my characters used in the X-Men '97 cartoon series, season 2, on Disney+, from the Inverse magazine article at the link: https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/x-men-97-season-2-time-travel-comics-canon

I gotta ask, is there a reason you're not naming the novel or the author? Quick Google makes it clear it's FALL by Neal Stephenson (there's a Bsky account but no idea if it's real, it's made no posts) lareviewofbooks.org/article/none...
Screenshot of the LA Review of Books review of Neal Stephenson's FALL:

“Nonexistence Seems Preferable”: Post-Truth, Feed Identity, and the NPC Afterlife in Neal Stephenson’s “Fall; or, Dodge in Hell”

“Fall; or, Dodge in Hell ” is a superior successor to “Reamde” and a worthy if imperfect addition to the Waterhouse-Shaftoe stories.

By Jonathan P. Lewis • July 7, 2019
[image of cover to the book]Screenshot of the text of the review:

Further conflict occurs when Moab, Utah, appears to be destroyed by a nuclear blast; the true fallout mainly occurs on social media, where Moab “truthers” rally around these events as part of their opposition to the US government’s supposed treachery. Here the novel’s central problem emerges: exploration of how social media might be hacked on a global scale is the kind of world-transforming issue that drives Stephenson’s finest works, but as strong as the section on the Moab incident is, it quickly fades from the plot until one wonders why it was introduced at all. It simply seems like a MacGuffin needed to draw another billionaire (Elmo Shepherd) into conflict with the Forthrast estate and with Egdod in the novel’s two worlds.

The Moab incident posits a frightening vision of what could happen if a precision hoax executed through viral marketing on social media became experienced as a persuasive social reality. As with reactions to global climate change or the US elections in 2016, Stephenson explores how such a moment could be weaponized in a disinformation campaign strengthening already present divides to the point where we could see a post-reality schism and social bifurcation.

After the Moab section, a second plot begins, involving Dodge’s beloved grandniece...

My 3rd favorite TV show of all time is HBO's Station Eleven, and Himesh Patel's relationship with Matilda Lawler's child character is the heart of the show. I should note that in the book the characters barely interact. The deep relationship was invented for the show.

Text over the image says, "THE PLAY".Image from HBO's Station Eleven, of Matilda Lawler's young Kirsten with a hunting rifle slung over her shoulder walking next to Himesh Patel's Jeevan, as they walk through a scrubby forest path in winter snow.

In choosing enemies, Trump decided ALL OF THEM (except Russia, Israel and the Saudis). Make friends with the people you're begging for money from (Putin, MBS, and later Xi) and earn the hatred & fear of everyone else. Act tough and the underlings will cower. As you note, Trump was wrong.

That's very Hoosier, very Indiana. The state of Indiana has approved use for state legal work an LLM "AI" tool that hallucinated fake case law and citations over 34% of the time. Screenshot of Greg's cited article, and a Stanford U study on WestLaw's LLM tool. hai.stanford.edu/news/ai-tria...

But others outlined more extensive use. The attorney general’s office received approval for a Thomson Reuters-owned tool that “provides attorneys with AI-powered legal research tools to generate answers to complex legal questions, draft initial documents, summarize case law, and identify relevant statutes.”

Slayde Settle, spokesperson for Attorney General Todd Rokita, didn’t say whether this system was in active use but confirmed the office has started to use AI tools.

“Our office is the largest law firm in Indiana, handling tens of thousands of open matters at any given time with a dedicated team of attorneys and staff,” Settle said. “To continue meeting that responsibility at the highest level, we must smartly adopt every available tool that strengthens our work. We have already begun to deploy AI for many of our non-attorney back-office functions and we are excited about the cost savings that can occur there.”Screenshot of the Stanford U study at my link:

AI-Driven Legal Research Tools Still Hallucinate

In a new preprint study by Stanford RegLab and HAI researchers, we put the claims of two providers, LexisNexis (creator of Lexis+ AI) and Thomson Reuters (creator of Westlaw AI-Assisted Research and Ask Practical Law AI)), to the test. We show that their tools do reduce errors compared to general-purpose AI models like GPT-4. That is a substantial improvement and we document instances where these tools provide sound and detailed legal research. But even these bespoke legal AI tools still hallucinate an alarming amount of the time: the Lexis+ AI and Ask Practical Law AI systems produced incorrect information more than 17% of the time, while Westlaw’s AI-Assisted Research hallucinated more than 34% of the time.

Read the full study, Hallucination-Free? Assessing the Reliability of Leading AI Legal Research Tools

To conduct our study, we manually constructed a pre-registered dataset of over 200 open-ended legal queries, which we designed to probe various aspects of these systems’ performance.

A local comic artist, illustrator, and writer is among the finalists announced for the 2025 National Cartoonists Society’s Divisional Awards for excellence in cartooning.

It’s the 80th Annual Reuben Awards, with talented artists submitting work from all over.

Katie Cook lives in the Brighton area and is among the nominees in the “Online Comics – Long Form” category.

Cook grew up in Saline and graduated from Saline High School, before later graduating from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. She’s a wife and mother of two, and a cat lover.

Per her website, Cook is the creator of the comic “Nothing Special” and has done projects with Marvel, Boom!, Star Wars, and more. It states “Katie has worked on licensed properties for Marvel Comics on a variety of projects. She also worked with the Jim Henson Company, working on the comics of Fraggle Rock and working as an illustrator and writer on Jim Henson’s The Storyteller. She was the writer (along with artist Andy Price) behind many of the bestselling My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, a comic based on the popular children’s TV show of the same name”.

The NCS Conference and Reuben Awards is a three-day professional event open to members and non-members August 6-8th in Columbus, Ohio.

Winners will be announced at the awards dinner on August 7th.

Katie Cook

What started as a hastily scrawled notebook of ideas on Katie Cook’s way back from a Chicago comics convention has turned into a popular webtoon with almost 30 million views and 3.1 million likes. Cook’s popular webtoon, Nothing Special, is getting the graphic novel treatment over at Ten Speed Graphic—it's the first original graphic novel of Cook’s, and the first of four books in the Nothing Special series. Readers can expect the graphic novel to publish next March, with the first volume covering the first season of the webtoon and featuring never-before-seen material from Cook.

Nothing Special: Volume One follows the life of teenager Callie, whose dad collects magical items and owns a magical antique shop. Callie has long considered herself “nothing special,” having lived in the human world her whole life—that is, until her seventeenth birthday, when she finds her home broken into, her dad missing, and a blood trail leading into the magical realm. With her friend Declan and a friendly ghost radish spirit, Callie sets off to find her dad and discover the secrets the magical realm holds.Katie Cook to Deliver 2018 Ringo Awards Keynote Address

Key Points

On August 28, 1955, Emmett Till, a 14-year-old Black teenager from Chicago who was visiting family in Mississippi, was brutally murdered.

His mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, made the courageous and historic decision to hold an open-casket funeral in Chicago.

The shocking photographs of Till's body, published in Jet magazine and other publications, exposed this brutality to the nation and the world.

This event, coupled with the acquittal of his murderers by an all-white jury, became a powerful catalyst, galvanizing a new generation of activists and helping to ignite the modern Civil Rights Movement.

The vibes may be exciting, but if Democrats are going to win this year and in 2028, they must reject the DSA.

If you’re tempted by a democratic socialist this year, think of what use Republicans will make of these victories, and ask whether you want to do favors for fascists.

KEY POINTS
More voters would be more likely to support a democratic socialist candidate than a Make America Great Again supporter or a candidate endorsed by President Donald Trump, the CNBC All-America Economic Survey found.
The findings may allay concerns of centrist Democrats, who have been worried about the leftward shift of primary winners in 2026.
The poll indicates that even with a number of self-described democratic socialists on the ballot, Democrats will have the upper hand heading into November’s midterm election, which is widely viewed as a referendum on Trump.
Capitalism remains more popular than socialism in the U.S., the poll found, but has declined in public sentiment in recent years as socialism has gained.Screenshot of the Wikipedia entry for The Bulwark, with a link's popup preview showing:

The Bulwark is an American news and opinion website launched in 2018 by Sarah Longwell, with the support of Bill Kristol and Charlie Sykes.[1][2] It initially launched as a news aggregator but in 2019 was revamped using key staffers from the recently closed The Weekly Standard.[3] The Bulwark is owned by Center Enterprises, Inc., which operates under the trade name Bulwark Media.

The Bulwark has been described as a centrist to center-right publication; it has frequently published pieces critical of President Donald Trump and his allies.[4][5] The Bulwark editor Jonathan V. The Weekly Standard was an American neoconservative political magazine of news, analysis, and commentary that was published 48 times per year. Originally edited by founders Bill Kristol and Fred Barnes, the Standard was described as a "redoubt of neoconservatism"

You might, like me, speak in superstandard English as an active nerdy rejection of high school standards of cool? anthrosource.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...
Screenshot of the linked article:

Abstract
Anthropological research has shown that identities that are "not white enough" may be racially marked. Yet marking may also be the result of being "too white." California high school students who embrace one such white identity, nerds, employ a superstandard language variety to reject the youth culture norm of coolness. These practices also ideologically position nerds as hyperwhite by distancing them from the African American underpinnings of European American youth culture.
