A strong start to an article about natural gas companies paying little to no royalties on significant resource extraction, likely due to government subsidies. "Fifteen years ago, those same companies paid nearly twice as much in royalties while producing half as much gas."
In 2019, Shell Canada, a subsidiary of one of the world’s biggest oil and gas companies, paid the British Columbia government not one dollar in royalty payments despite producing 175 billion cubic feet of natural gas.

‘Insights’ takes audiences far and wide with stories of struggle, triumph and renewal.

The Tyee learned of Shell’s nonpayment after reviewing records that the government fought hard to withhold and relinquished only as a date for a formal appeal under B.C.’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act drew near.

B.C.’s oil and gas resources are publicly owned, with companies like Shell paying one-time purchase fees to obtain the rights to drill and then paying royalty payments on each unit of gas and oil that they subsequently produce.

But while Shell and others have dramatically increased their drilling and production in recent years, what they pay in royalties has just as rapidly declined.

Truth and reconciliation require more than remembrance. They require action: implementing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, upholding Indigenous rights, confronting ongoing systemic discrimination, and changing the institutions that continue to reproduce colonial harms.

"Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak." www.nybooks.com/articles/199...
8. The followers must feel humiliated by the ostentatious wealth and force of their enemies. When I was a boy I was taught to think of Englishmen as the five-meal people. They ate more frequently than the poor but sober Italians. Jews are rich and help each other through a secret web of mutual assistance. However, the followers must be convinced that they can overwhelm the enemies. Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak. Fascist governments are condemned to lose wars because they are constitutionally incapable of objectively evaluating the force of the enemy.

Carney really flubbed that question, somewhat inexplicable that his PR team didn't workshop it in advance and have a talking point ready. Or maybe it was deliberate, who knows. Quiet assurances and reaffirmations of support were sent out rather quickly after it. Sucks to be the third rail.

We're so on edge that everything becomes a harbinger. But at the same time, we're seeing some significant cuts, the Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan is expiring in 6 months, etc. This might be because of broad based austerity and not animus, but that nuance will be lost.

GenderQueeries 🇨🇦 @genderqueeries.ca · 3h
Understanding the nuance of "testing the waters by making the age limit 19 instead of 18" is important as it shows intent, but that's often framed as irrational panic. Which isn't great.

When there are only a small number of often self funded people tracking our specific issues nationwide, we objectively do not have a good understanding of the threat environment and keep getting caught off guard. A reactive legal strategy has worked, but only sometimes and at great financial cost.

GenderQueeries 🇨🇦 @genderqueeries.ca · 3h
At the same time, as a community we're more or less blindly wandering into legislative and regulatory changes, in some cases after they take effect, and after the opportunity for advocacy and public input have passed. Sometimes things are caught in time, sometimes not.

Vancouver: North American Premiere of Concrete Land at VIFF. Saturday, October 3 — 8pm SFU’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts Sunday, October 4 — 12:15 PM Lindsay Family Stage at Granville Island viff.org/whats-on/vif...
The Najar family lives on the outer edge of Amman, Jordan, where luxury villas are closing in on the grazing space they have long called home. In Concrete Land, Jordan-born Palestinian filmmaker Asmahan Bkerat tells the story of one of Jordan’s last Afro-Palestinian-Bedouin families as development presses closer. At the centre of this three-generation family is 10-year-old Eman, growing up among meals, songs, arguments, labour, and the family’s care for Badrya, their beloved sheep.

Bkerat spent eight years filming, and she visited the family almost every day, documenting their daily lives in the face of erasure. There are no interviews to tell us what to think; the family’s presence is felt through their daily habits, and the film’s power comes from refusing to turn their displacement into spectacle. Premiering at Locarno Critics’ Week, Concrete Land brings urban encroachment down to one home, where Eman and her family fight to remain familiar to themselves as the world around them changes shape.

Content Considerations: Animal Death (not animal cruelty), racism, classism, school bullying of Eman (one of the main subjects of the doc), intergenerational displacement, forced migration

One hang up I have about queer Canadian history is how the 1969 partial decriminalization is discussed. It is often discussed how 1969 didn't really decriminalize homosexuality but my issue is how the bravery of Everett George Klippert is so often erased from the story.
