Listening to black library fiction is less grim dark that letting your youtube algorithm lead you down rabbit holes.

I'm not okay with how the world is. Where did compassion and empathy go?

The most frustrating thing about another person dead to political violence is knowing that this is never the end. There will be more, it will be senseless, no words will stop this because we are long past the point where words matter. Democrats will do nothing, republicans will just go again.

what really gets me is that all violence is political violence and when powerful people say “political violence” what they mean is “violence that might include me” and you know this because they’re only talking about one of today’s shootings.

linux development is great but every once in a while I get a problem that's arcane "what is actually installed and how" that has me googling and retyping things 20 different times till I find the actual solution half a day later. Still fun though.

Setup my discord bot to be a service on my pi, now it'll restart without me needing to check it

Long term plan, once i get a couple different projects done I'm going to start doing research on IRC implementation.

I think a bad project initializer just borked the repo somehow, but now it's done and I'm onto... adding thyme leaf and possibly other stuff for data visualization... joy

I spent a week with dental headaches trying to figure out how to get a simple java api with spring working (backed bysqlite) and just... repeatedly failing and giving myself worse headaches. Then I restarted yesterday and got it done in an hour.

The power of scrap everything try again should not be underestimated in programming

But uh, there are alot of asses involved and alot of risk the hype gang is trying to force on people. plus sweeping all these ethical concerns under the rug is pretty bad.

That said how someone reacts to the use of LLM's is a good way to understand them better (not in a negative way). Someone resisting the use isn't a luddite, they value reliability and consistency. Someone jumping on the tech isn't bad either unless they force others to.

You're a shop that only makes crud apps? Cool, clock out early because you'll need it when all the support tickets come in. But for most people programming is still a rich and involved problem solving adventure and LLM's are at best another tool. Some people still don't use neovim so calm down!

Even the people hyping how productive it theoretically could be dont really appreciate that their company cannot effectively sell 10x the product, or that even if it gets there, 10x isn't strictly useful.

I think I've come to the conclusion that AI hype is much ado about not much. It's probably not going to hurt things (other than right now) much and the best case scenario is a gradual adoption by a subset sort of like node or python.

I finished installing arch linux on my surface only to realize i forgot the network manager.

Fixed selenium in my wsl setup. I suspected the problem was the manager just didn't work for linux and... I was right. You just build your own service, set the executable_path and then pass that into the driver when creating it. THANK GOD.

Today is c memory management review and selenium embedded in my wsl fixing. I'm honestly going to try and flash a surface pro later to Linux also so... busy day.

Took a break from coding to rest after getting a headache multiple days in a row. I think I'm subconsciously clenching my teeth when dealing with this problem so that plus dental work is giving me migraines. I'll be sure to figure out this sqlite dialect problem Monday though.

Tim Jones @geldshot.bsky.social · 17/05/2025
Trying to make sqlite work with my ORM is actively giving me a headache. If spring complains one more time that it's missing a dialect I'm providing...

Tim Jones @geldshot.bsky.social · 16/05/2025
Database import done though, got all the data sitting in sqlite, I just need it to work with my frameworks.

Tim Jones @geldshot.bsky.social · 16/05/2025
Current java development feels like an insane place. Any explanation of what is going on throws in 3 extra frameworks to handle something without explaining and I'm genuinely surprised anyone can penetrate this. I'm fueled purely by stubborn pride right now.

my morning is working on a spring boot api, but first I have to fill the database. The plan was to make a simple api that i could view enemy data from arknights from. Now I'm so many levels deep parsing json with python so I can fill my db. Who knew games had complex data? (I did)

Tim Jones @geldshot.bsky.social · 15/05/2025
Did an interview related to java/selenium, now I'm continuing this spring boot api adventure. There are some nice things I'm seeing though like beans and end points displayed for easy reference.

I worked it out, I get what its doing, but boy do I have a headache.
000
Tim Jones @geldshot.bsky.social · 15/05/2025
I'm not saying it's bad mind you... but I think I'm running into the typical tutorial problem where they show you something removed from a dev environment and when you try to follow yourself... the actual process has so much more to it that was just assumed you know.

Tim Jones @geldshot.bsky.social · 15/05/2025
Really alot of the code examples I've seen in the last day are probably a big example of why people start to hate clean code. Java domain imports have so much text to them I can kind of see why someone would start to hate it.

Tim Jones @geldshot.bsky.social · 15/05/2025
I once was told c# and java are similar languages. Having spent the last 24 hours trying to setup a spring boot Java app I am now disabused of this notion.
000
Tim Jones @geldshot.bsky.social · 14/05/2025
Half the time you spend in a language for your first project (or first in a while) is seriously just getting a dev environment to work properly. Need to sleep on it and magically fix it after a good nights rest. Also Cypress stuff tomorrow.

Tim Jones @geldshot.bsky.social · 14/05/2025
My coding efforts today were only stifled visually because I decided to try and spin up a quick java project with spring so I could get a glance at current java dev. Maven quickly gave me a headache and now i'm trying to fix my repository.
