Taking notes and affirmations from Truschke's words on analog classrooms and banning AI as well. This is the first semester I've switched to analog assignments in creative writing. Next year, I'm bringing back the old school professor's mixtape of required reading in a spiral-bound course pack.

So much clarity on teaching humanities with integrity: "I never ask students to not be offended. I would consider that counterproductive and a denial of their human emotions. Rather, my goal is to offer students a clear path for working through their emotions in pursuit of a humanities education."

*the way my queer heart flutters* Folks, the forthcoming Foglifter is pre-order ready! You should snag a copy, it's going to be so gorgeous! Among the lovelies whose work features herein, I go off into the deep end, waxing lyrical about spiders while mourning social collapse during the pandemic.

Forgot the alt text: Photo shows the wax tube entrance to a Tetragonisca angustula beehive with five bees perched on guard on the outside. These are tiny bees--about as small as a honey bee's upper wing--yellow-bodied, with green eyes freckled in black spots. Photo credit @martijnslot.bsky.social

New nonfiction out in @thedodgemag.bsky.social, from a time when I was briefly a beekeeper in Iowa (spoiler alert: it was a disaster). The bees in the photo here are Tetragonisca angustula, a species native to Panama, and a source of endless passive fascination. thedodgemag.com/summer-2026-...

Adding this to my ongoing collection of social insect fiction discourse. "what would ayn rand have them do—scatter and leave the colony foodless, defenseless? or worse, have the workers fight among herselves for the last scrap of succulent grub?" It's a wee story, you have time to read it.

"I still believe in my country because | joy keeps happening without | permission" I could have drop-quoted any line from this poem and it would have pulled you into the group hug we all need. Read both poems at the link. Breathtaking work by Oladosu Michael Emerald >>

Let me tell you, there is no thrill greater than showing your child that a creature from their imagination exists in real life. We looked at a whole bunch of nonbinary (gynandromorph) butterflies tonight. You should too.
6-year-old's doodle of a butterfly with the left half of its wings painted in sparkly orange-red, and the right half in sparkly blue-green. Smudgy fingerprints abound. A gynandromorphic common blue butterfly on a thistle flower. Left half of wings are iridescent powder blue (male patterning), and right half are brown fringed with orange dots (female patterning). This creature from that nest remains and probably always will be the coolest thing I've found: the bilateral gynandromorph Polyergus longicornis; half worker, half winged male alate. A They/Them Ant. 🖤❤️ Still feels kind of surreal! 🌿🐜🧪
Black and red ant split neatly down the middle head to gaster; the black half being the male alate, and the red the female worker. The black half has a wing, the red does not.View of the other side of the creature, the red worker half.Top down view; the single translucent wing is covering nearly the whole gaster. The head and thorax is red on the right, black on the left. The creature, facing you, showing off the wild difference between each half. The worker mandible is like 4x the size of the alate mandible. The alate eye is roughly twice the size of the worker eye.

Ashraf Shaikh: "Communities don’t need poetry. They need policy. Wildlife doesn’t need abstraction. It needs security." Stumbled upon this piece quite by accident and I'm simultaneously in awe of the impassioned argument and dying inside because my own writing has so often missed the mark.
