These stories happen all the time when you know to look for them. I'll never forget the time the FBI arrested a dude up here for his efforts to provide material support to terrorists. He came to Cleveland and started taking photos of landmarks. Agents gave him the camera and paid his bus fare.

(Which, again, was "A lot of evangelicals parents were trained by orgs like Focus on the Family to abuse and domineer over their kids, and now they're being trained by those same organizations that they are not to blame for their kids cutting them off.")

120

Sorry to everybody arguing with Craig but I'm blocking him and I don't know if that'll break the threads. I'll just say again "Democrats abuse children too" is boring whataboutism to distract from my actual point.

120

I'm describing MY feeds, I'm not making broad generalizations about who cuts people off. The important part of my point is that patriarchal, high control evangelical norms are *a* thing that fuels both toxic parent/child relationships and a later refusal for those parents to take responsibility.

030

And none other than Focus on the Family has pivoted from content about how you need to spank your strong-willed children to counseling aging parents that even though their adult children have cut them off, it's not because they did anything wrong.

5854

I get a lot of ex-vangelical content in my feed and the Venn overlap between "so you left your parents' Southern Baptist Church" and "so you cut off your domineering, physically abusive, MAGA parents" is pretty huge.

There's this ancient, but fantastic burger chain here in town and lately they've been doing a bunch of cool and innovative stuff and so of course today they put out a notes app apology about how they're going to slow down and get back to basics. I can't put my finger on it, but it feels Red State.

Is this better than the Pied Piper breakthrough at Y Combinator 2016?

I have a (not Ring) camera pointed at my garage and it's been picking up the same opossum for the last two weeks. just pacing around. Tonight we settled on a name for him. The Opossum Paul

That movie is a trip (wordplay!).

Torchwood. Season 1-2 are fine fun. Season 3 is some of the best SF ever televised. Season 4 is shockingly, indescribably terrible.

Almost as soon as Americans started being able to buy automobiles—when they were powered by electricity, steam, or gas—a few industrialists realized that if everyone owned an internal-combustion car, those people would have to rent infrastructure forever from companies that sold gas and built roads.

Just caught wind of this "People and Wil Wheaton are mad California resident Tom Morello didn't vote for Kamala Harris" and may I just say: lol

I love films and filmmaking and I'm a little interested in I PLAY ROCKY but this is not really a subgenre I'm interested in seeing continue. For that matter, I don't need a feature film about the adversity overcome in the creation of the Wendy's Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger.

They look like this but everybody keeps insisting the show is brilliant and you're reading too much into it.

Some string-pulling shadowy dudes from Neon Genesis Evangelion. They have hooked noses.

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

A LITTLE older than me. Springfield High School class of 2003 here. My friend was Rossford '05

In 2001 I turned 16, so, I'm afraid it's T'Pol.

oh nice. I grew up in Holland/Springfield. One of my closest friends (wisely not online) is from Rossford.

Back to Rossford? Wait are you FROM. ROSSFORD?

I am not a scientist but I have to wonder if it's already too late for this guy. He can't be talked out of this, but even if he could be, would it matter at this point?

nw: SOME KIND OF HEAVEN (2020, dir. Lance Oppenheim) I always meant to check this documentary about The Villages, FL and listening to @rilaws.bsky.social and @alisonwillmore.bsky.social on Critical Darlings brought to my attention that it's another Lance Oppenheim joint.

A couple minutes late to this, but it was a great week of movie watching and I need to celebrate #LetterboxdFriday and my #LastFourWatched. Not pictured but exciting first time watches this week, THE COLOR OF MONEY (1986, dir. Martin Scorsese) and BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (2005, dir. Ang Lee).

A screenshot of my letterboxd Last Four Watched.
THE WEIGHT (2026, dir. Padraic McKinley) 5 stars
PRIMETIME (2026, dir. Lance Oppenheim) 4.5 stars

Update: if you can get to Cinemark Valley View in 57 minutes, GO. I'm serious.

PADRAIC "PAT" McKINLEY Carries THE WEIGHT with Conviction, Collaboration, and Craft - Exclusive Interview

I caught what I think might've been the last showing in Cleveland of THE WEIGHT (2026, dir. Padraic McKinley) and it absolutely blew me away. I'm saddened this gorgeous, potboiler of a film didn't get a bigger release and a bigger reception. I hope more people find it.

Pat McKinley and his collaborators found a way to give THE WEIGHT the technical polish its story deserved without polishing away its humanity.

I'm not saying the post wasn't block worthy, but the guy in the spreadsheet commenting on uneven moderation here (the line about what warrants a 3 day ban vs an execution) was very funny.
