And FWIW, I'm not prescribing anything here, or claiming this is what you need or what will work (not even sure this will work for me, yet!). Just... writing down my own experience, something I haven't really done. I hope you find what helps you get back to not feeling tired/sad/hopeless <3

"Disengage" primarily meaning getting away from social media, along with anything that just feels like it brings me down or drains me at a disproportionate rate. Also, going to limit myself to making smaller improvements closer to home. Hoping that leads me back to seeing results and re-engaging.

I've been struggling with this for quite some time, but to be honest, I've tried very little because I've just been caught up in work. I've been unemployed for a while right now, so I'm privileged and fortunate enough to focus on this. I'm trying to disengage some so that I can recover.

🫂 I feel similarly. Maybe not driven by all the same things (although yes to being tired of all of the things you listed too!). It's kind of like burnout, but existentially. This feeling of caring about things, but having a mismatch between input and results. It eats away at you.

I'll (likely) survive this. I also have FOMO with all the dweb folk over in the Vancouver area. I think this is all pointing to one thing: I have to move to the west coast. It's where my people are.

To clarify: I got the probing bit working for "hard" NATs. Both sides opening up a bunch of ports, spraying requests hoping for a hit, birthday paradox being the mathematical basis for why you don't need to open too many to have high probability of getting a hit.

This works for what I'm building because it's intended to work offline by default, so as long as you can eventually get a direct connection, data will sync. Also, my favourite part of that article is when they reduce the multi-dimensional firewall/NAT table to a single row: "Firewall is yes" 😂

Not sure how well this will work across topologies, but it's enough that I can start building and "forward fix" stuff 🎉 Two reqs I had: 📱↔💻 Should work from a mobile browser on a cell network, connecting to a native app on my laptop. 🙅‍♂️ STUN-only, no TURN. I don't want to operate relays (for now).

Just got tailscale.com/blog/how-nat... working in-browser, via WebRTC. I felt like I hit a wall, banging my head on it trying to figure out how I can build full, useful privacy in the browser without needing to build anything myself at layer 3. Thanks for the great write-up, @tailscale.com ❤️

I tried to like Silksong, but I just couldn't. I had a lot of fun in the original Hollow Knight, and happily worked through learning and levelling up my own skill on each boss until I was able to win the fight, but something about Silksong made this whole process far less fun.

💯 I can imagine your career in journalism has really shown you all the world has to offer on this front too. I bet you've calibrated your "radar" really well to notice it quickly 🙂

Dehumanizing rhetoric about an ethnic group is what I can support, and that does real harm. That would've been enough. Not all of the labels. The rest of the post, including my positioning, I still stand by. Future posts will take more care in the argument.

(Jason) Gedge @gedge.ca · 06/08/2026
A follow-up that I posted, after reflecting: I led with "racist, fascist, white supremacist philosophy" before making any argument to show that. It's not required for my stance either. My attempt to distill his whole moral philosophy from the Ferrari quote was also a weak argument, and unnecessary.

(Jason) Gedge @gedge.ca · 05/08/2026
That's why, moving forward, I'm going to focus on well-formed arguments. My energy is better spent there vs having nasty people like this come into my space. They're waiting for people to slip up and be all "GOTCHA". It's also just good practice for me 😊

(Jason) Gedge @gedge.ca · 05/08/2026
Second, I've also learned that people who jump in so strongly to a random comment (we're not connected on LinkedIn) with such strong wording are unlikely to be there in good faith. This person would've likely come in even if I had a strong, well-formed argument.

Honestly, I've learned a lot from this experience! First, I've conceded that my argument had weak points, but not for the reasons this person called out. I should have stuck with "communities should distance themselves from members continuously making harmful statements". I'll be better next time.

That's what taxes are, man. That's the definition of taxes. "You are subsidizing things you might never use" man shut the fuck up. My taxes currently subsidize like oil company exec private jets, you think I'm upset at low-income people eating inexpensive bananas?

My apologies, I didn't mean to target @spacecowboy17.bsky.social with that comment, just my frustrations with feeds from most companies 😭 Thanks for calling that out. Super appreciate all they've done for the "For You" feed, because I love it ❤️

A friend and I were talking about this recently, how early social networking often had an idea of an end, often finishing with a signal like "you're all caught up!". We'd love to see a return of stuff like this :) But it would mean optimizing for the user, not the business 🤔

I love this line from the README: > Imagine if we removed all the requirements of a production-ready distributed system. I feel we've nerd-sniped ourselves into solving "big data" production problems, but it's a made up problem. Remove the woes of centralization and a whole new world opens up!

💯💯💯 And I'm guessing that's how you approached Tailscale 🙂 7+ years ago, setting up a private network that is easily accessible from all of your devices probably felt the same to many, I'm sure, and you all were like "it doesn't have to be this way!".

💯 agree I'm (very slowly) working on something to make it not suck, but not necessarily trying to solve EVERY problem (e.g., email, payments). I was actually inspired by Tailscale :)

At the end of the day, all I hope for is my posts to be thought/conversation-provoking. I may write in a less eloquent and "intellectual" style than some, but I'm down for some civilized discourse. Honestly, even with this person, if they can come back less nasty, I'll have some discourse!

I appreciate you, Anthony, and I'm glad there was something of value there. That will really help me not disappear from the (social) internet completely 🙂 I'm probably insufficiently thick-skinned for the social web haha.

I think this is why we need to continue to push blogs and websites more than social platforms. I think the world struggles with (on average) nuance in these limited character posts. Blogging gives one the opportunity to capture all of the context. I should journal (offline) instead of posting 😂
100
(Jason) Gedge @gedge.ca · 29/07/2026
It makes me realize why I largely avoid social platforms nowadays. Was my post flawed? Sure. I have limited character count, so I have to pick and choose as best as I can. That means lotsa nuance and missing context. My hope is that people would ask questions to surface missing context, not assume 😞

I had a relatively nasty reply to this LinkedIn post. The reply was very much a "but he has a good point"; but used phrases like "oh do shut up", "you lefties", "Consume less soy, grow a pair, and find Christ." 🫠💩

Also, one from his best pal Tobi Lütke, based on a reply to this tweet: xcancel.com/EricSThor/st...
And here's his good pal Tobi, thinking it would be a good system if the rich got more voting power because they pay more taxes 🙄

Source: https://xcancel.com/EricSThor/status/2081169480076370150#m

For accessibility, since LinkedIn doesn't allow me to attach alt text to a comment image, Tobi replied "good system" to a reply to a tweet that said this:

"Interesting... what about weighted voting proportional to the level of income tax you pay? (no income tax paid - 0 vote, $1-100k - 1 vote, $100-200k 2 votes and so on... cap it at 5 votes for $500k+. For those that constantly complain about the wealthy not paying tax/fair share they'd have nothing to worry about right? Why not reward representation of taxation and build a democracy around those that foot the bill?"

Tobi also had the gall to call people with pensions "dependants" and equate them to those under voting age (in the sense they shouldn't be able to vote). Tobi touts "freedom of speech" for his SaaS platform, but is okay suggesting a system that oppresses a group of people. These people like freedoms for themselves, but not for others.

All corporate capitalism does is produce privileged, clueless idiots that think they know what's best for everyone.

I'm going to post a screenshot of my LinkedIn post here, because it's really hard to chunk it properly 😞 "I've decided I will boycott Rails, any 37signals product, and anything created by DHH to avoid any direct or indirect support to his platform (and ego)."
The Rails community needs to distance themselves from DHH. This bigot has been openly spraying his racist, fascist, white supremacist philosophy all over the internet. If you look up this post (and there are many other terrible ones) he shows a lack of understanding of how biological systems work, but tries to create a parallel between wolves and the unhoused.

"When wolves get out of control, you shoot them. When gypsies take over public spaces, you deport them. This isn't hard, it isn't cruel. It's the basic logic of self-preservation."

Umm, dehumanizing an entire group of people you don't vibe with isn't cruel? Creating systems to support this group of people isn't even an option you'd consider? It makes sense he wouldn't though, as here's another one from a podcast he was in (source: https://xcancel.com/davidsenra/status/2081511391656337429)

"You have an obligation, if you sell a product or service and you make a lot of money on it, to put that money back into the system. Send some of that money to the craftsmen of Italy to create you a beautiful Ferrari."

I vehemently am against this narrow view (important note, he also later refers to it as a "moral obligation"). I'm not opposed to using financial privilege to support local artisans and whatnot, but DHH doesn't even toss out the idea that you can also use that privilege to donate to causes that support and lift the less privileged. Honestly, seems like his moral philosophy is "throw the underprivileged people not like me over the fence and make it someone else's problem while I live in my fancy house, buy/race fancy cars, and spout ostensibly intellectual tantrums in my echo chamber, whilst patting ourselves on the back for doing so"

I've decided I will boycott Rails, any 37signals product, and anything created by DHH to avoid any direct or indirect support to his platform (and ego).

I'm not saying we shouldn't criticize the government's move to enact the Emergencies Act, but if you're unwilling to talk to someone from Ottawa that lived through this, you don't understand. Anyways, just piling on to his awfulness. He has his own (white privileged) agenda. Screw everyone else.

(Jason) Gedge @gedge.ca · 25/07/2026
What DHH failed to do was talk to any human living in Ottawa at the time. The conditions were awful in the entire downtown area (harassment, the horns could be heard afar, etc), they were apparently abysmal in the area the truckers resided (the "honking" was 24/7, so many struggled to sleep).

Me, a week ago bsky.app/profile/gedg.... He loves hearing his own voice, I can imagine. He's an absolutely awful human being. My disdain towards him exploded when he went on some BS "free speech" tantrum during the convoy occupation of Ottawa (where I live). This one: world.hey.com/dhh/i-was-wr...

Nothing! For me (but I'm sure many), pursuing a vague urge generally puts pressure on needing to figure it out, which often makes it stressful instead of enjoyable. Usually it's pent up energy, so I just redirect it to something I will enjoy doing and sometimes figure it out along the way 🙂
