Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Tibo (@heytibo.eurosky.social) made a refined version of Your First Shader from Zero to show what an experienced artist can achieve from the course's result. It uses polar coordinates to make this circular motion. You can grab it here: www.gdquest.com/library/firs... (go to Download Files in nav.) 1487
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Hopefully, this helps ease the process of getting started for you. If you go through it and have feedback or need extra explanations, don't hesitate to join our Discord. There is a channel dedicated to this series linked from within the page. 010
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 12/09/2026We made a free shader series, Your First Shader from ZERO in Godot 4: gdquest.com/library/firs... You will create an animated portal step by step and learn reusable techniques like drawing procedural shapes, create masks, use smoothstep() to control transitions, draw gradients, animate, and more. 315035
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 01/09/2026The free intro to shaders guide we're working on for @godotengine.org is shaping up well. It should amount to about 1/5th of a book in size. We're making sure all the techniques covered (masking, warping, procedural shapes, etc.) are common building blocks directly applicable to many game shaders. 19013
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 29/08/2026In the meantime we released some cool shader guides with techniques that apply to all sorts of shaders like: www.gdquest.com/library/cont...gdquest.comControl shaders with simple functions | GDQuest LibraryLearn how to control shaders with a little math and without guesswork 0112
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 29/08/2026My teammate @cashewolddew.bsky.social made this interactive shader preview for the upcoming free lesson to get started with shaders from zero in the Godot game engine. Coming soon to our free library! 21039
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 28/08/2026I checked earlier today, and it seems UIDs are applied only to tool scripts, so only when saving from the editor but not at runtime/externally. Then Godot falls back to using file paths exclusively. 020
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 28/08/2026I'd personally still take the full type validation and being able to directly save and load my in-game data structures like player stats, inventories, etc. without having two parallel serialization systems if possible. I imagine there are plugins these days that also provide a simple solution. 020
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 28/08/2026Interesting. So, still today, externally saved resources don't use the UID system. I'm used to not moving things having used Godot for a long time because everything used to be referenced by path in your project (Godot 3 and prior). 120
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 27/08/2026You store your saved data into a single variable like a dictionary, and then you use this function to save it as binary data. But it does not support saving and loading objects directly, just like JSON. 010
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 27/08/2026Everything like scenes in Godot are resources, and you can see it supports saving and loading large amounts of data. If you are worried and would still like to use something else, I recommend the Godot native FileAccess.store_var() feature. 111
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 27/08/2026It's okay, just make sure to put them into a specific folder. They can also be referenced by UID in which case you can move them around, and you just have to make sure to only extend their code and not rename variables to make your life easier. 221
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 08/08/2026Everything can work but it's just hard to find the person you need. It doesn't help that a lot of people our generation are afraid of getting hurt or committing, or want it easy, which doesn't work for building anything serious 010
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 08/08/2026Congrats! I hope it boosts your wishlists and your launch 021

Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 20/06/2026And @heytibo.bsky.social worked on it (the animated Gobot head that guides you is his work). 050
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 20/06/2026It's seemingly easier, but as we've done it, I'd say anything web-based would probably be way easier. Most of what you'll need to do to provide a good learning experience isn't supported. Especially for the target audience: kids, teens, generally neophytes. It's been a lot of work. 430
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 17/06/2026I haven't checked how Yuri used it but you can use it to make a function work as a factory pattern like the common pattern you see in Javascript where a function creates an object with attached member functions. 110
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 17/06/2026It's a keyword used to preserve the state of a variable defined elsewhere (for example, in a parent scope) in a closure. It's one of those slightly cursed things to work around the default scoping rules in Python. 110

Reposted by Nathan (GDQuest)Robin-Yann Storm @rystorm.com · 06/01/2026You cannot technically explain yourself out of UX issues, please stop trying. So often I see users bring up UX issues, and programmers then tell them how much work it was to create their product. It doesn't matter how much work it was!! What matters is if your target audience uses it or not. 1732361
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 09/06/2026The above is assuming you use a CSV file. If you're working with the get text format (PO files) then for sure you don't need a file for the source language. You just make translation files for other languages like Spanish etc. 000
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 09/06/2026So if you use English as your keys running the translation function over them with the locale set to English should do nothing. It should only change the strings when the locale is set to another supported language. 100
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 09/06/2026You're sort of expected to because the key is not necessarily expected to be English text. But in practice, you don't have to because if the translation function cannot find a translation for a given language, it will return the source string. 130
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 07/06/2026It's a good price! What we do here for individuals on top of that is offer regional discounts, which make the most difference. We'd love to have scholarships too but for FOSS like Godot it's not necessarily easy to set up. I hope you find good partners to offer that sustainably for you! 020

Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 08/05/2026I've seen it a bunch of times where also people in a team assume designers, marketers, etc. somehow won't be able to understand the unique requirements of the project or want to skew it toward something trendy. While actually a good professional adapts to the project's direction and needs. 020
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 08/05/2026You've probably seen it working for clients. When you do design work they may request counter-productive changes sometimes due to personal preference, sometimes also ego (the "I need to touch everything" or "I have great ideas" types). 220
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 08/05/2026I feel the Denning-Kruger effect is a big part of that. We all learn and use things and it's easy to think that anyone can use that personal experience to do usability or education work. I say that cause the devs/engineers themselves should realize what they don't know and push back. 340
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 07/05/2026For the next version, we went straight to building our own thing in pure TypeScript, with as few dependencies as possible. A 600 page website builds in ~800ms on a single thread, and it's not really optimized. It's reading, transforming, rendering, resolving, and copying all files every build. 091
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 07/05/2026We used Next for the first version of our LMS platform (for various reasons) knowing we would replace it later, but honestly, I never imagined it would be this bad. It's also really slow, the documentation says you can do things you can't, it makes very easy web standard things hard to do... 1102
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 02/04/2026I'm looking forward to the talk! Will you put it up on your channel? Also, are you going to GodotCon? If so I'll come say hi, I'll be around this time. 110

Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 08/03/2026An absolutely incredible add-on for anyone making shaders with Godot! Click different lines in your shader code and instantly preview the output at that point in the code. 18222
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 07/03/2026Good luck! Not being affected by how people phrase things is easier said than done. For me it came from working in education, especially coding education for newcomers (and online), you have to manage a lot of frustration, anxiety, pride, etc. among learners. 050
Nathan (GDQuest) @gdquest.bsky.social · 07/03/2026At GDQuest and even including when I maintained the Godot docs, over 10 years, I can hardly remember really aggressive exchanges. It usually stops at people being frustrated on the first message and being happy or thankful from the first reply. One trick for me is to always ignore the form. (4/4) 170
