I'm afraid no one is going to remember or care that I exist on my birthday. Maybe it's not important.

Great, but why is this a line chart with a spline interpolation and not, say, a stacked bar.

Can I get back to you? It's probably that data can be expressed as fractions, instead of all floating point numbers.

I used to spend more time treasure hunting, especially for coins. Looking forward to doing that again when the little is old enough. Garage sales, antique malls, estate sales, thrift stores, here we come. There are online options, but I love (non-algorithmically) finding what I wasn't looking for

I'm writing a book on sports analytics, and I've been shilling it on main. But the truth is, I'm sick of sports. I only started analyzing sports to connect with my dad, and the moment I come out that's moot. I just want to be done with the book at this point so I can move onto the next thing.

Summer semester is so, so, close to being done. The last three months have been super productive, but in the sense that it took a massive effort just to hang on.

I don't know what will happen to markets, but if you're interested in tracking this indicator, search for "This Week In Petroleum" for regular updates from the EIA. 4/4

The EIA lists one of the requirements for non-emergency draws that there be 254 million barrels remaining, so that might be when the reserve is effectively empty for commercial purposes. The US is already doing an emergency draw, so that alone won't stop them, but 254 million feels significant 3/4

It was built in response to the 1970's oil crisis, and meant to cover 100 days of imports in case of any major disruption. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), as of July 3, there was 319 Mb left, and 5-6 million had been drawn from the caverns in each of the last 8 weeks. 2/4

Let's talk about the US strategic petroleum reserve (SPR) now, before everyone starts talking about around September. The SPR is a collection of salt-lined caverns deep underground just north of the Gulf of Mexico. It's built to hold about 715 million barrels of crude oil... 1/4

I think I know what I'm planning to do with this Bluesky account. I make books and courses, but I don't want to sell on this account. Instead, I want to use it to find people to commission for the parts I can't do well, like make graphics, music, video editing, and the like. Stay tuned.

Is there a good way to find books that are updates of, or responses to, a current book? Something like the "cited by" feature in Google Scholar. I'm really enjoying a general audience book on the business of sports, but it was written in 2003. Everything newer that I've found is academic.

Rocks and sand. Some tasks take a large block of time and can't be effectively chopped up because it takes a lot of time to get mentally or physically set up. Those are rocks. Things that can be chopped are sand. Plan your month around rocks and fill your day to day time with sand.

I get that these websites aren't charities, and that the collection and warehousing of detailed data takes effort. However, they're not the ones that are making the data. Academic journals charge universities and libraries a fee for blanket access. Could we do something like that? 4/4

Sports websites everywhere are closing off scraping access, often without a financially accessible alternative like an API. Without data my sports analytics students, and amateur analysts everywhere can't do their projects. No amateurs now means no professionals later. 3/4

Of the three websites that WorldfootballR scrapes, one words (Transfer market), and it's inconsistent HockeyR isn't much better; it has data up to a 2023-24, saved as a file on GitHub, and then nothing Personally, losing scraping access makes future research harder, but there's a bigger issue 2/4

Spent hours trying to fix a data scraping function in the WorldfootballR package only to realize that the data can't be scraped through the page source code on Understat anymore. Then I spent time looking for any viable alternative package or data source for soccer shots; none existed. 1/4

Detailed sports data is getting harder to come by as database websites like Understat make scraping hard or impossible without providing some sort of API. I'm worried for the future of amateur sports analytics.

At the high net-worth level, you have well-informed investors looking for stores of value that will appreciate with inflation, and can be used for various tax shenanigans. In times when holding a lot of cash hurts you, you want physical goods that are easier to store than commodities.

VF649 @gc649.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
Adding more. What the mechanics behind being a leading indicator of inflation? At the consumer level, people have a lot of free cash and they're looking for ways to invest that money in the future, and collectibles are accessible and fun. The stock market is complex, but a pack of cards is simple.

VF649 @gc649.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
But back to inflation. We hypothesize that rapid and broad increases in the collectibles market are a leading indicator of inflation of utility-based goods like food, fuel, and housing. When one asset type skyrockets, that's a craze. When several do, that's a harbinger of inflation. 8/8
