On a whim, I once watched 2001 on an airplane. On the tiny back-of-the-seat screen. It was magnificent. In fact, the famous bone to space ship cut hit harder than ever.

My dad was/is a movie lover and in the early days of VHS he would bring home anything and everything. I recall watching American Werewolf in London at about ten yrs old. That Nazi demon nightmare sequence, my god.

On this day in 1981, Terry Fox died. His funeral was broadcast nationwide and memorial services were held in hundreds of communities. Flags across the country were lowered to half-mast. Learn more in my Deep Dive 👇 buff.ly/QqZiNNK
Black-and-white front page of The Globe and Mail, dated Monday, June 29, 1981. The main headline reads Terry Fox’s courage hailed as inspiration to the nation. A large photo at left shows two people at a press conference, and a large portrait at right shows Terry Fox wearing his Order of Canada medal. Smaller columns and headlines fill the lower half of the page.

Saw this two nights ago and I’ve been trying to figure out my very tangled reaction. I was baffled and disappointed at first. But boy has it stuck with me. Woke up today almost in love with it. Your piece has helped me understand why. Thanks as always.

One of the best films by one of the best directors, Howard Hawks #BOTD. Only Angels Have Wings (1939, dir. Hawks, written by Hawks and Jules Furthman). It has everything: adventure, romance, comedy, and a heart wrenching, haunting look at death.
