I love this. “And if we unpack the word /desire/, from the Latin /desiderare/, meaning, literally, away from the stars, we learn that every desire implies a distance, an absence, a lack of satisfaction.” - Jhumpa Lahiri, (2022) Translating myself and others, p66.

In panel 1, labeled easy, there's a person labeled northern cardinal wearing a party hat, a beak, and red clothes, and a person labeled roseate spoonbill wearing pink clothes and a wooden spoon on their nose. In panel 2, labeled harder, there's a person labeled merlin sound ID wearing a big green circle with a microphone modeled after the button on the merlin sound ID app, and a person labeled hybrid green x blue jay wearing a complex costume with a mask and robe and hat modeled after a recently discovered hybrid bird. In panel 3, labeled challenging, there's a person labeled baltimore oriole nest wearing an enormous accurate woven oriole nest suspended from their arms and shoulders, and a person labeled african jacana carrying chicks with a hideous costume of long-toed bird feet hanging from their armpits. In panel 4, labeled hot, there's a person labeled high quality spotting scope who is shirtless and is wearing a spotting scope mask on their head, and a person labeled sexy owl pellet wearing an owl pellet top and bottom with a mouse skull on their head.

The "yuri is male gaze" debate becomes gut-bustingly hilarious once you realize that, more often than not, the genre is created by female mangaka sitting at their desks like:

I shared some photos this morning of the new Barbour x Norbit collection. Some people really liked the jackets, but expressed concern over the prices. These jackets are, admittedly, expensive. So here are some tips on how to get something similar for less. 🧵

A poem wrote itself in my head today. It climbed out from under the rubble and made a daisy chain out of ruin— stringing words together as if creativity can be conjured out of nothing, out of air. A poem wrote itself in my head today but I was not there. #sensewrds 272

Meeting the Light Completely
Jane Hirshfield

Even the long-beloved
was once
an unrecognized stranger.

Just so,
the chipped lip
of a blue-glazed cup,
blown field
of a yellow curtain,
might also,
flooding and falling,
ruin your heart.

A table painted with roses.
An empty clothesline.

Each time,
the found world surprises—
that is its nature.

And then
what is said by all lovers:
“What fools we were, not to have seen.”

English novelist, poet & essayist Mary Shelley was born #OTD in 1797. Daughter of famed philosopher & feminist, Mary Wollstonecraft, Shelley is best known for her 1818 Gothic novel "Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus." www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/mary-w... #LitSky #BookSky #gothic
A dramatic, artistic composite portrait of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797–1851), the English novelist best known as the author of Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (1818). The image overlays a classic 19th-century oil painting-style depiction of Shelley—shown in a three-quarter view with pale skin, dark curly hair parted in the center and falling softly around her face, large expressive brown eyes gazing directly and thoughtfully at the viewer, and wearing a low-cut black off-the-shoulder gown typical of Regency-era fashion—onto a dark, textured background filled with layers of translucent, handwritten manuscript text in faded ink. The overlaid script appears to be excerpts from Frankenstein (or closely related drafts), featuring Mary Shelley’s own elegant, flowing cursive handwriting with crossed-out words, revisions, and phrases such as “the wretched phantom,” “catastrophe,” “limbs,” “rain,” “window,” “features,” “great God,” “skin scarcely covered,” “work of muscles and arteries,” and other evocative fragments describing the Creature’s creation and appearance. The text swirls and overlaps around her face and shoulders like ghostly memories or the very pages of her groundbreaking novel coming to life, creating a haunting, literary effect that symbolizes how her personal experiences, intellectual circle (including Percy Shelley and Lord Byron), and the famous 1816 ghost-story contest at Villa Diodati inspired one of literature’s most enduring and influential works on creation, responsibility, isolation, and the ethics of science.
