There have never been more great games to play, and the list just keeps increasing. If your favourite developer or publisher is doing something gross, it's never been easier to Just Play Something Else. I just took a year off of work and promise modern games are amazing, and numerous!

Ok, I think I narrowed it down a little. It turns out that I can only repro the issue after playing the game and choosing Exit To Menu - so it's not when launching the game and getting past the splash screens. My guess is that the game world is still being unloaded?

This is on PC, and it seems like the video is buffering as the menu elements have indeed loaded but hitting the stick results in extremely delayed both sound effect and the highlight actually moving up or down the menu. I should double check it installed to the correct (fast) drive 🤔

I've learned that I am particularly sensitive to friction like this in games, and it's something that as a dev I always flag when we're reaching a milestone - my experience is that someone on the team has already noted it, but it's hard to get buy-in from management to address them.

* This is the first game I've encountered an issue with this, but having R3 as both camera movement AND target lock just feels fiddly and hard to pull off in combat: I suspect because it's so fast paced and you zoom around a lot. Especially with enemies with target-able weak points

* The main menu is incredibly laggy until the video (or VFX?) in the background loads * I have to interact with story NPCs multiple times to explore their dialogue tree (I want to hear all the great conversation and lore!) * Moving around the progression menu (not a grid) on gamepad feels unreliable

I'm really enjoying CONTROL Resonant, but it's not without its flaws: primarily I think these come from Remedy stretching their ambitions (good!) and trying to make a very different type of game from their usual narrative shooter template. There are a number of issues that add friction:

I wish I could manually zoom in and read all the great handwritten signs and whiteboards in the environment! If that means photo mode, please make it really convenient to jump in and out. I just want to absorb all of the team's work!

It's truly criminal that Lone Echo and its sequel are forever locked to the Oculus PC platform, and I'm sure will become lost media when Meta kills that storefront in the near future. When people say "HL Alyx is the only true AAA VR experience" I have to remind them about Ready At Dawn.

Long story short: I think as an eReader it's great: battery life is fantastic and I got a cheap magnetic-close case online. But I wish it actually ran the Libby app. Those tiny chinese ereaders are interesting to me, but the Kobo is already just small enough for me to throw in my sling bag!

98% of the time this isn't a problem, but sometimes Libby has a book that you can borrow which doesn't match Kobo's own database so it won't sync to your device. So far I've only found that with public domain stuff like Jane Austen where I think there are just 100s of variants and Kobo doesn't match

I for example have cards at two libraries (Montreal and the provincial Quebec library), which Libby handles seamlessly but the Kobo cannot (or will not) work with both, so it only actually syncs books from the "primary" card. There's also some weirdless because Kobo maintain their own book database.

The underlying Overdrive API appears to be basically deprecated at this point, and the assumption is that everyone is using the Libby app to both borrow AND read books/audiobooks. So the Kobo use case is buggy, unreliable and frequently setup fails. Many Reddit threads about this :(

The biggest plus point for me is integration with Overdrive so that I can borrow books from my library. The best workflow I've found is browsing and borrowing books through the Libby app on my phone, and then manually syncing my Kobo to download them.

Seeing CONTROL Resonant described as "messy" alongside these kinds of scores reassures me that the team at Remedy decided to Try Doing Something and it mostly paid off, but won't hit for every player. Absolutely there day one next week.
