Certainly not many with Brexit aesthetics

Yeah I think for a lot of people Brexit is a hygiene thing. There’s plenty of people who agree with the Tories on migration and working age benefits but think Brexit was the work of morons and don’t want to vote for the moron party.

Think the right strategy for the Tories is to target middle class Brits who want to pay less tax (it’s Lindy) but why would anyone believe they’re capable of achieving it after last time?

Don't think there's that much fishing coverage in national news.

I think fish processing isn't really a secondary activity in the same way.

Gavin Jackson @gavinjackson.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Sure but that would apply equally to fishing. If you start including like boat maintenance and fish processing the industry gets a lot bigger.

The economic question I'm interested in about Games Workshop is whether it has created a cluster around itself. I know there's the Lead Belt in Nottingham but it seems like it's Games Workshop and then tiddly outfits. There is Creative Assembly but that's down in Sussex.

But if you do that for games workshop you should do that for fishing too. The fish processing industry is bigger than the fishing one, for instance.

Yes I've seen that one before too. The key thing anyway is that a big sophisticated successful economy consists of lots of small niches that will always look tiddly when compared to the whole.

Gavin Jackson @gavinjackson.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Yes you got a lot of this around Brexit, claiming the fishing industry was small and therefore undeserving of attention. But fishing has not done very well out of Brexit and there are lots of small industries which nevertheless have national import (e.g. journalism).

GW's staffing costs were £167m and its profit is £206m. So GDP contribution of £373m if all those staff are in the UK.

This can't be right. UK fishing contributes £888m to GDP. Warhammer's revenue last year was £625m, its contribution to GDP will be less than its revenue.

Under Bolsonaro (senior) the rate of forest loss in protected areas and indigenous territories remained low. There has been slight growth in the number of these areas during Lula's third term.
1143
Gavin Jackson @gavinjackson.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
But you can see that even under Bolsonaro (senior) it never reached the areas of the 1990s and early 2000s. That is because the main way that deforestation happens is through landgrabbing and under Lula the ownership of the land has been disambiguated.

I visited the Amazon rainforest a year ago ahead of the cop conference in Belem. Historically the only thing that has stopped deforestation has been electing Lula da Silva has Brazilian president. www.economist.com/the-americas...
