Prepping for the next adventure of the playtest campaign < Developing an elaborate metanarrative in which the game is written by a character in the setting based on pseudo-historical events.

You’ve heard many times, no doubt, the story of the Witch King. In bedtime stories, story books, and big budget films every decade or so. You’ve heard how through treachery and dark magic he cut down the High King and ended the last hope of a united Isle. You’ve read, or watched, how the heroes defeated him. What you might not know is that the oldest written version of this story (itself written hundreds of years after the story is said to take place) makes no mention of these heroes: no Felic, no Lucia, no gold spearhead or magic bow. In this tale the kingdom falls, the Witch King wins, and then, essentially, nothing. A few leaders, the author says, attempt to “rally folk to common cause,” but all are swiftly defeated. Eventually, they speculate, the Witch King must have died or departed, but “not year nor season nor cause” is known. No wonder later writers decided to ‘punch up’ the story, adding a band of daring heroes, a wise mentor, a tragic sacrifice.

It is not necessarily true, of course, that the oldest version of a story is closest to the truth. Every tale of the Witch King is more legend than history. But in creating this game, I have chosen to take them at their word. What if the Witch King won, but his reign of terror turned to slow decline? An isolated Isle left without the structures or institutions that had united them, the spaces between them growing wilder year by year? This is the world of To Places Lost.

Hellow I am writing to raise my concerns, disappointment, and frustration with ALA President Sam Helmick’s recent statement identifying themself as a Republican, and call upon them to apologize and resign as ALA President. It is inappropriate and unproductive for a member of the Republican party of the US to be the president of the ALA, especially right now as the Republican-led US government is dismantling libraries and other public services, targeting immigrants, people of colour, and transgender people, stifling freedom of speech, and spreading misinformation. Were it any other organization doing these things, it would be disgraceful for ALA’s president to align themself with this group, and it is even more inappropriate given that this is the ruling political party in the United States. How many ALA members are being directly harmed by their actions? The actions of the Republican party also do not align with Sam’s own values according to their statement that “The collective efforts of ALA members and library workers around the globe empower communities, enrich lives, and safeguard the principles of open knowledge and free expression.” ALA’s leader identifying as a member of either political party also compromises ALA’s independence. As a Canadian member of ALA, I do not feel comfortable being represented by an organization that is aligned with the US government, especially considering president Donald Trump’s statements about my country. I am especially concerned because ALA’s accreditation is effectively the only way people can be recognized for their library degrees here. For the body responsible for this accreditation to be aligned with the Republican party is deeply inappropriate. If action is not taken to rectify this situation, I will cancel my ALA membership. I understand that ALA is in an extremely difficult position, but attempting to appeal to the oppressive and authoritarian government will only allow them to do more harm.

Got to playtest this, and it was fun! Needs a few tweaks, but the basic idea of having structures change hands and layer cards to represent changes over time I think is pretty effective!
