Most of the artwork I have of the Emperor shows him with black hair and a skin complexion that suggests an Eastern Mediterranean if not Middle Eastern origin. And the books also infer he has a strong connection with that region of the world.

It probably hasn't gone anywhere. GW most likely took down the articles and related photos to prevent what happened with their Dark Water release. A whole load of 3D prints appeared of similar looking models before the game was even released.

And those three series are centred on human protagonists (not Space Marines). There's series focusing on the aliens, like Path of the Eldar. Orks, Tau, and a recent one with Necrons acting like a couple of old "Queens". There's even a kids series of 40K books (Warhammer Adventures: Warped Galaxy).

The Horus Heresy books are 40K adjacent, and should only be engaged with if you want to get into all that (of 70+ books). There's the Inquisitor Eisenhorn series, their Ravenor sidequels, etc. The Ciaphas Cain series is quite good, kind of a 40K Flashman Papers. Gaunts Ghosts is brilliant.

Most if not all of those guys aren't welcome in Warhammer stores, or in the hobby. You can still see them at independent stores and events, as happened a few years back when a Neo-Nazi attended an independent tournament in Spain. That and racist WH Lore videos led to GW statements like this:

Doing my yearly Horus Heresy readthrough in blocks of five books at a time with the main Heresy series, then the full marathon with the Siege of Terra series. Up to A Thousand Sons and it's one of the few major sci-fi series that actually works at a metafictional level truly as in-universe history.

Pity they can't create a bot that tells you when someone's IP Address is in a different country than what they claim to be, or are using a VPN. Just have it make a reply to any of their posts saying it. I'd ask for one that blocks them, only that will block democracy advocates in places like Iran.

Did you ever read Starblazer? (It was the Sci-Fi and Fantasy twin of Commando.)

What's interesting to me is that lamps like Argand's burned Whale oil (as well as vegetable and seed oils). Who came up with that? How did they find out that oil from Whales could be used this way. Plus it was another 70 years until the introduction of the Kerosene lamp (c. 1850)

There are good WH videos on YT. And all of them don't use AI Slop art and thumbnails. Any WH video that uses AI art, is probably also written by AI if not read by it. In 40K AI stands for 'Abominable Intelligence', which is highly appropriate for the AI we currently have.
