I think it helped that when I found out about all this, rather than scold him, I told him what we were gonna do about it and that was pretty much it. He didn't need me to make him feel stupider than he already felt

He is....it was an expensive lesson (he's pretty big into these costly mistakes these days lol), but he's got a job and it'll be fine. I'm just thinking "dude you have a professional criminal investigator who handles cases like these who sleeps 2 layers of sheetrock away! Why not say smtg?!"

My own child fell for one of these scams. And I have to look in the mirror and realize that, as many things as I warn him about, I never once mentioned this stuff to him

PLEASE tell them that now, especially in the age of AI, YOU DON'T KNOW IF SOMEONE IS REAL UNLESS YOU'VE BEEN IN THE SAME ROOM WITH THEM! And if you send them the money they demand, they won't just stop. They'll keep demanding more and more. The only way to get out of this is to block/report/ignore

They never stop to think big picture. "This person is a professional scammer...they have no interest in ruining my life. They're interested in money, so if I block/report them, they'll move on to the next target rather than waste time sending my dong pic to all my followers"

Some kids will go to a trusted adult and seek out advice, but most are so ashamed of what they've done that they want to just make it go away. Imagine telling your mom or dad that you sent a hog-out pic to a stranger! It's mortifying!

Teens are super vulnerable to this scam because this is an extremely-scary possibility! Did anyone else used to have nightmares about being butt-ass naked at school? Imagine if someone threatened you with this??? If you can get someone to be scared, you can get them to do anything

the stranger, obvs purporting to be age appropriate, starts getting spicy. they ask the teen for a nude pic. Teens are super horny, so they fall for it. as soon as they send the pic, the stranger says they'll send the pics to everyone the teen knows unless teen sends $$$

If you have kids, PLEASE educate them about social media sextortion schemes. If you're unaware of these, let me quickly break them down. Teen meets a stranger on social media. They go to DMs to chat more privately. Eventually this moves from sosh meeds to texting/msg apps (signal, telegraph, snap)..
