🌱🇳🇿 Echinacea's name comes from the Greek word "echinos," meaning hedgehog or sea urchin, a nod to the spiky, cone-shaped seed head at the center of each flower. #PlantFacts #GardenersOfBluesky

🌱🇳🇿 Chamomile is nicknamed "the plant doctor," old gardeners believed tucking a few plants throughout a bed, instead of grouping them in one spot, boosted the health of everything nearby. It's one of 10 in this kit → medicinalseedkit.com/kit/#aff=kij... #PlantFacts #MedicinalGarden

🌱🇳🇿 The candy "marshmallow" is named after this exact plant, early versions were made by whipping the root's sap into a foam. Modern marshmallows haven't contained any actual marshmallow root since the late 1800s. #PlantFacts #GardenersOfBluesky

🌱🇳🇿 Feverfew has been used for headaches since at least the 1st century, Greek physicians wrote about it. Modern clinical trials show modest results at best, but the plant itself has outlasted most remedies from that era by a long shot. #PlantFacts #GardenersOfBluesky

🌱🇳🇿 Lavender's scent comes from oil glands on tiny hairs covering the whole plant, not just the flowers. That's why brushing against the leaves on a walk releases almost as much fragrance as the blooms themselves. #GardenersOfBluesky #PlantFacts

That's great that it's naturalized on its own, yarrow spreading easily like that is usually a sign of healthy soil underneath. Does it take over much, or does it stay fairly contained on your property?

25+ years is wild, that's some serious staying power for a perennial. Violet yarrow is also less common than the white I usually see pictures of, is that a specific cultivar or did it just come up that color naturally?

The waiting is the hardest part after all that nursing through summer heat! If cold's coming fast, a frost cloth thrown over it overnight could buy you a few extra days for that bloom. Rooting for it! 🌱

At the end of the season I find once again that I like growing vegetables so much more than I like harvesting or eating my yield. I go through this each year, but would feel wasteful not growing food. I’m good at it and sharing with neighbors is rewarding. 🌱

The apparition that is welcome to haunt fall: Virginia creeper 🌱 #nativeplants ? Feels like a "neonative" to the western U.S. similar to Alaskan mule deer or PNW barred owls. It's native to the continent & we've facilitated its spread, but it's not like...cheatgrass. Sometimes a problem.
Palmately compound Virginia creeper leaves begin to turn red along with the bright red stems and deep purple berries of the fruit clusters.
