"How can I accept a world where over a million people will die this year for want of a cure that has existed for nearly a century" Thank you John for saying beautifully something I feel I have been screaming into the void my whole life. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Great news, dentistry is much older than 8th century! www.adea.org/godental/dis... ... Pretty sure I'd rather take the modern version tho too

I'm familiar with the argument and my counterpoint is: Capitalism drives innovation! Like 100 flavors of Gatorade, Government lobbying for tax loopholes, and new forms of technically not serfdom!

Doesn't even have to be that extreme IMO. I'd be angry even to see my (non existent) IP show up in a marvel movie. But I'm pretty anti-corporate

I do get that, but I also feel like it's divorced from the consequences. Money getting shuffled around between investments is money that isn't doing much good vs say buying books for millions of children. I'm not sure what the ethical middle ground is, but the current average isn't satisfying

I hate that I live in a world where a picture like this is immediately having me go "oh hey, that looks like AI" no particular tells, just a now built in reflex of "it just looks like slop"

Why are we asking that question about an AI but letting world hunger run rampant? Why are people so concerned about if AI has human intelligence when humans are dying in detention centers?

Then you realize you weren't the one who invented it, just the one who popularized a few efficiency improvements in Europe. The true inventors are too numerous to name and your destruction will only delay it by a few years at most...

www.abc27.com/pennsylvania... As the article says, 3 felonies daily is probably hyperbole, but it's impossible to live normally and not break laws
abc27.com
Does the average Pennsylvanian actually commit three felonies a day?
(WHTM) — Everyone makes mistakes, and the laws in our country can get complicated, but some may be wondering how often Americans commit crimes, even if they don’t mean to or realize it. A 201…

You only have enough food to feed 200 million people, but you have 250 million people, who are you choosing to starve? If everyone gets vaccinated then you can eradicate this disease, but you'll have to violate basic consent to get everyone vaccinated, what is the right choice?

I don't actually recall what Parfit specifically said, so that's probably most of why I don't have feelings about it. And population ethics are just kinda inherently disconcerting. They force you to ask questions like:

Cover roofs, not parking lots. There's no point in wasting a billion tons of metal making new roofs to put the panels on when we already have empty roofs that can hold the panels just fine

Okay a lot of these are overstated to the point of being misinformation. The cake thing for example was specifically Subway fast food chain bread for example. And I have no clue what the wax thing is on about given that I can't recall the last time I saw a waxed apple

Imagine Al was suddenly banned.
Would you actually be willing to give it up?

My main concern is: how did they solve the ocean problem? Ocean water is famously terrible for just about all modern materials, not just because of the salinity but because of the wonderful diverse life in it. This is great for nature, but moving parts tend to run into issues
