If you can find a way to keep developing games, and especially if you can keep *enjoying* developing, your success compound over time. Ross the data scientist explains this really well in a YouTube video we did about this! #gamedev #indiegamedev

2 years ago we decided we wanted to pivot from our boring corporate jobs into game development... but to make that a reality, we needed to know whether any of our ideas had any demand from players 🤔 We couldn't find a tool that would answer our questions, so we made one ourselves 💁‍♀️ #gamedev

Researching Pins and Pegs Fest revealed what might be the first market segment where a unique game is the opposite of what players want 💡 Instead you need to nail a realistic experience #gamedev #indiegamedev

Why are survival games getting on trains? We took a look at this innovative market segment on Steam in our latest YouTube video... it's very niche, but we're all closet train nerds right? #gamedev #indiegamedev

Some player reviews are just negative for the sake of being negativ, but guess what? It's ok if some people don't like your game. I'd love to know how you deal with the haterz 💡 #gamedev #indiegamedev

There are gaps in almost every genre on Steam and cyberpunk games are no exception! The games need much more subtle ways to stand out, and players are really vocal about what they need! #gamedev #indiegamedev #cyberpunk

Mobile base survival games are a REALLY interesting market segment on Steam at the moment... it's full of game developers thinking outside the box, but do you think you could look further? #gamedev #indiegamedev

When we did this research we didn't know what we would find & it's a topic that's taken on a life of it's own in the game industry! We'll probably need an update in 2027 to see whether players' attitudes towards AI use in game dev have changed and if any of our conclusions are different 👀

Not every ocean game wants to scare you. ABZU has no dialogue. In Other Waters has no combat. Beyond Blue feels more like a documentary than a game. Sometimes the best hours in gaming are the quietest ones. 🌊 #gamedev #indiegamedev

Weird games are winning on Steam. But the ones that actually sell aren't just chaotic, they have a hook you can explain in a sentence. We recently dug into Dungeon Munchies as a case study, but what's your favourite "outlier" game and why does it work? #gamedev #indiegamedev #indiegames

There's a pattern in underperforming games: they try to serve too many players at once. Developers keep adding features for different audiences & the game ends up doing too much for anyone to love. We're working through this ourselves. How do you decide when to stop adding features? #indiegamedev

Iris and the Giant. Dicey Dungeons. Alina of the Arena. Shroom & Gloom. None of these were built to fill a gap in the market. They were built because the developer was fixated on one idea. That fixation is readable. Players feel it. #indiedev #gamedev

Game Oracle @game-oracle.bsky.social · 05/05/2026
The deckbuilder genre isn't saturated. It's a framework that indie devs keep reinventing. Slay the Spire proved the market. It didn't close it. The question for any dev building one right now: does your version have a reason to exist? #indiedev #gamedev

We could see developers hopping on trends left right and centre, but what if you could see when a trend was dead or dying, and where new trends were emerging? That would be quite helpful wouldn't it?! So we used our Steam Map to make 3 maps of current trends on Steam... and now they're yours 💘
