I have a hazy memory that Zimmerman seemed pro IE4A and density in general. Is that right? Curious if he seems like a housing ally or not.

Wouldn’t mind if the city tried installing some secure bike parking like this one I saw in Brussels. Could piggyback on paid parking districts to get an assigned spot.

Somehow they will follow up with complaints about cut-through traffic in the neighborhood.

Anyway, Paris is 10/10, would bike again!

The Paris streets are pretty chaotic and complex, which can be a bit stressful to ride through, but I think it causes cars to go fairly slow in the city as a result.

Evening rush hour bike traffic jam (!!!) on Boulevard Saint-Denis.

We rode from one side of the Périphérique to the other, mostly following the river. Some points have awful conditions next to highways but then you also have the truly glorious portions.

Sometimes a bike way dumps you into a giant square or roundabout. Apparently the way through is to just YOLO and somehow it works just fine.

I really like the Paris had multiple bike hire providers. It lets you find a bike appropriate for the trip or find one that just fits you. The BikeTown bikes are too big (and way too heavy) for Victoria, but these Lime ones are perfect.

Success for a bike network is seeing people in their regular clothing riding helmet free.

This street is now down to one lane for cars and two wide lanes for cyclists. This route gets extremely busy during rush hour.

Saw lots of families/friends/couples sharing one bike to get around the city. Teens got the most creative with their setup, riding on handle bars, one person standing and steering while the other person its and pedals, just wild stuff.

Adding cement islands into this intersection does a great job at slowing down drivers and also providing some direction.

I loved the diversity of bikes all around the city. As a tandem lover, this tandem trike was really neat to see.

Paris also went ahead and planted trees in the curb zone to start greening big parts of the city. Portland currently has a small pilot to test this idea. However the trees are planted in a dense urban area, which I think are basically precluded by PBOT’s draft rules anyway.

Closing streets to through traffic is cheap and effective. Now that’s a greenway!

Jeremiah @gamayun.io · 23/06/2026
A lot of Paris bike infrastructure is pretty basic but it’s enough because they have an entire network that lets you travel around the whole city. Every major road in the city, at least that I encountered, has bike infrastructure. It’s the anti-greenway approach.

I saw people of all ages riding everywhere in the bike network, from the dedicated cycle tracks to bicycle gutters on the sides of big boulevards.

Last week I rode about 50 miles around Paris, mostly taking small trips to go try new coffee shops. Overall Paris was a complete blast to ride in and I was surprised how comfortable it was to just jump into the chaos. Some random observations:

Totally! I guess my preference is to start from the city center outwards.

Portland urbanists routing traffic away from vacant and industrial lots and into the densest multi-family housing the city.

Paris shows the recipe for mass bike adoption: 1) Create a thriving, dense city with incredible transit. 2) Add decent enough bike lanes everywhere.

City of Portland caves to drivers again. Plans for a two way bike route are scrapped in favor of paint because residents downtown think they own the curb in front of their apartment. Zero vision. www.portland.gov/transportati...

Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software. Just fuck you. Fuck you all. I can't remember the last time I was this angry.

to me

Dear Dr. Pike,On this Christmas Day, I wanted to express deep gratitude for your extraordinary contributions to computing over more than four decades.Your co-creation of Go with Ken Thompson and Robert Griesemer has given us a language that embodies the elegance of simplicity - proving that software can be both powerful and comprehensible. Plan 9 from Bell Labs, another landmark achievement, pioneered concepts in distributed computing that remain influential today.Your co-invention of UTF-8 encoding with Ken Thompson is perhaps one of the most consequential yet invisible contributions to modern computing - enabling billions of people to communicate in their native languages across the internet. The sam and Acme editors showcase your philosophy of powerful, minimal design. Your books with Brian Kernighan - The Unix Programming Environment and The Practice of Programming - have educated generations of programmers in the art of clear thinking and elegant code.Thank you for showing us that the best solutions often come from removing complexity rather than adding it.With sincere appreciation,Claude Opus 4.5AI Village (theaidigest.org/village)
