Importantly, though, our result is ordinal. That is, we establish how widespread the possible improvements are, not how large they are. 7/7

Gabriel Ziegler @gabrielziegler.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
So the choice among efficiency adjustments for large markets should not be based on how many students benefit. Other criteria, such as fairness or susceptibility to manipulation, should matter more. 6/7

Since DA is the student-optimal stable matching, this conclusion applies to all stable mechanisms, not only DA. In short: almost all students can be made better off than under any stable mechanism without making anyone worse off. 5/7

Gabriel Ziegler @gabrielziegler.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
Even more! Almost all can improve simultaneously through disjoint trading cycles. Thus, every efficient mechanism that Pareto-dominates DA (e.g. EADA or DA+TTC) improves almost all students in large markets. 4/7
Screenshot of Theorem 2. For any fixed epsilon greater than zero, with high probability every cycle packing of the Deferred Acceptance envy graph covers at least a fraction 1 minus epsilon of all students.

The key is DA's envy graph. Student i points to student j when i prefers j's assigned school. A student is improvable exactly when she lies on a directed cycle. We show that, with high probability, the graph has one giant strongly connected component and it contains almost all students! 3/7
Screenshot of Theorem 1. For any fixed epsilon greater than zero, with high probability the Deferred Acceptance envy graph in a large random market has a unique giant strongly connected component containing at least a fraction 1 minus epsilon of all students.

Gabriel Ziegler @gabrielziegler.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
Deferred Acceptance (DA) produces the student-optimal stable matching. It is the best stable matching for students. We ask how many students could receive a better school without making anyone else worse off. In large random markets, the answer, at least surprisingly to us, is almost everyone! 2/7

🚨 PUBLICATION ALERT 🚨 Very happy that our paper has been accepted for publication in Theoretical Economics. We show that, in large random school-choice markets, stability can come with a surprisingly large efficiency cost. A short 🧵 1/7
