Character *is* choice. Backstory and quirks are only window dressing if they don't inform the choices the characters make that propel the story. The more interesting the choices, the more interesting the character. And often times, audiences want characters making different choices than they would.

Half the job of breaking into writing is figuring out how to break into writing. Just writing isn't enough. There is no one way in. There are hundreds. And figuring out which way will work best for you and your work is the trick of it. Every one of us has a very different story about how we did it.

Failure is part of the process. No one cares about your failures. No one wants to talk about your unsold manuscripts or the drafts that didn't work before they finally did. Your successes will define you. So don't be afraid to fail. Fail, fail, and fail again. It's the only way to find success.

Being a writer is almost entirely about perseverance. Life is going to continuously try to keep you from writing or from getting published or from getting things made, and you just have to get in life's way and say “No.”

When brainstorming a story, it doesn't matter whether you begin with your plot or your characters first. Develop in whatever order works for you. But when the work is finished, it has to feel like the two are inextricable - like one couldn't exist without the other. If it doesn't, you've failed.

Stop worrying that the pages aren't good enough. If they aren't good enough, you'll make them good enough when you edit. Sometimes, you have to see a thing on the page before you know exactly what it is supposed to be. The rights words often only come after the wrong ones.

There are two different things an audience wants from your story: 1) they want your protagonist to get what they want or, in some cases, deserve. 2) they want to FEEL. Sometimes those are one and the same. But sometimes, like in E.T., TITANIC, and many horror movies, they are not.

Stuck in a scene? Do what the pros do: use brackets. Write what the story beat is: [Our hero gets out of the fight through clever means] Then just keep writing what happens after. Maintaining momentum is key to getting the most words on the page. Meanwhile solutions often present themselves later.

Small. Daily. Goals. 1 page. That’s it. Give yourself one page a day. That’s only ~300 words. Less than ten skeets. You’ll be surprised how many times you’ll write more than that and how quickly the manuscript will emerge and race towards The End.

“My problem is I’m a perfectionist!” Being a perfectionist isn’t something odd or special; it’s the default setting we all begin at as writers. We all seek perfection. Professionals know perfection doesn’t exist and is only imagined in the eyes of the viewer/reader. “Perfect is the enemy of good.”

When to reveal character information like internal emotions or backstory is a key choice to make. Informing the audience before something is relevant tells them how to feel about it when it is; informing them after it is relevant forces them to reevaluate their feelings about what they witnessed.
