NEW: AI bots caused Wikipedia's bandwidth costs to increase by 50 percent last year, and are still growing exponentially. I wrote about its plan to fight back — and whether it will be enough. www.platformer.news/wikipedia-ai...
At the same time, the organization disclosed today in a new blog post, the situation is becoming untenable: AI-driven requests for Wikipedia content are growing exponentially, at significant cost to the foundation, and are not being paid by the companies responsible. Those companies are also serving information from Wikipedia without attribution, greatly reducing the chances that their users will visit Wikipedia and contribute or donate to it.

Moreover, during surges of interest in the site — after the death of a celebrity, for example, or in the wake of a natural disaster — bot traffic to other pages is now so significant that it is causing slower page loading times for human users.

When we're done with all of this, we should really get rid of: - the two party system - the presidency - the US Senate If we had a parlimentary, multi-party system, we could have elections in months to remove this clearly insane guy from office. Instead, we have to wait almost three years.

In the fight against authoritarianism, there is no stronger weapon than mass noncooperation: strikes, boycotts, etc. Protests and direct action is important, but mostly as methods of convincing large numbers of people to not comply. We can stop the regime if we refuse to cooperate with them.

The new chairman of the FTC wants to investigate cENsORsHiP on social platforms and boy do I have a platform for them! www.platformer.news/ftc-censorsh...
Of course, there actually is one social media platform that has become notorious for removing content based on whims rather than policies. It has banned journalists, blocked links to rival social media and messaging platforms, and suppressed the publication of newsworthy documents related to the 2024 election. Just today, its CEO said he would “fix” the company’s crowdsourced moderation tool after its user base promoted ideas about Ukraine that he personally disagrees with.

I believe the law is on this platform’s side: it ought to be able to do all of that, if it wants to. But if Andrew Ferguson is determined to get to the heart of censorship on American social networks, and root out instances of policies that only ever favor one side or another, he can start with Elon Musk’s X.

I will not be holding my breath.

Asanda Zondi received a startling phone call last Thursday, with orders to make her way to a health clinic in Vulindlela, South Africa, where she was participating in a research study that was testing a new device to prevent pregnancy and H.IV. infection.

The trial was shutting down, a nurse told her. The device, a silicone ring inserted into her vagina, needed to be removed right away.

When Ms. Zondi, 22, arrived at the clinic, she learned why: The U.S. Agency for International Development, which funded the study, had withdrawn financial support and had issued a stop-work order to all organizations around the globe that receive its money. The abrupt move followed an executive order by President Trump freezing all foreign aid for at least 90 days. Since then, the Trump administration has taken steps to dismantle the agency entirely.

Ms. Zondi’s trial is one of dozens that have been abruptly frozen, leaving people around the world with experimental drugs and medical products in their bodies, cut off from the researchers who were monitoring them, and generating waves of suspicion and fear.

Instead of going to therapy we all wrote about trying to rise to the moment, how we do this work, why we do this work, etc: www.404media.co/behind-the-b...
The reason this work is so hard at this exact moment is not just because a lot of shit is happening all at once, all over the government. It’s because the administration is hostile to journalists and to people who leak to them, so the stakes of any given story might be very high. We need to confirm information from sources who are in tricky situations, are actively being pressured to quit, are regularly threatened about the potential consequences of leaking or speaking to the press, and are giving us information at great personal risk. We often need to tell these people that what they’re telling us isn’t enough for us to report; we need multiple sources and specifics in order for us to feel comfortable publishing something, and so there are a lot of things we’ve heard but can’t actually publish because we don’t know for sure if it’s true, or because publishing it would almost definitely put a source at risk, etc. So for every article you see on the website, there are probably 10 more that we are trying to get at any given time, reporting lines we’ve had to abandon, and things like this. Add onto this that the District Attorney in DC is actively threatening journalists, the person we’re reporting on hates journalists, is the world’s richest man, and owns a massive social media platform filled with sycophants and uses it to directly threaten people who report on what he’s doing, and the whole endeavor is pretty high stakes and stressful. That’s to say nothing of Trump himself or Kash Patel or any of the other folks potentially involved here.
