Git is the ANSI C of version control. It is flexible and has low overhead but to get most things done, you need to manage raw pointers. CVS is BCPL. It works if everything you do fits neatly into a one-dimensional array. #jj-vcs is … I’m not sure?

When writing prose, it makes sense to move around in the file character-by-character. But when reading, it is nice to move sentence-by-sentence. I wrote a little #Emacs minor mode to do that: github.com/gn0/sigh-mode
Sigh Mode activated in Emacs 30.1, highlighting the sentence "We can hardly suppose a parliament of hitherto speechless elders meeting together and agreeing to call a cow a cow and a wolf a wolf."

It seems that Guido developed Python 1.0 on an SGI workstation. Honorable mentions to Linux and, since it's Jan 1994, 386BSD, as desirable porting targets. Around this time, software developed on expensive workstations was becoming accessible to the broader public. ftp.ntua.gr/mirror/pytho...

Unusual life hack: making Vim emulate Emacs. Saving files in insert mode by pressing ^X^S and replaying macros by pressing F4 are creature comforts of the day.
33 lines of Vim script that bind Ctrl-X Ctrl-S to saving the file, F3 to recording a macro, and F4 to saving a macro if currently recording and to replaying a previously recorded macro otherwise.

What you would see if Andromeda was brighter in the night sky
If the Andromeda galaxy were brighter, it would be a major feature in the night sky, visible even in cities with moderate light pollution: 

Huge: It would appear roughly six times larger than the moon. 

Dominant: It would dominate the sky and be easily identifiable every night. 
Visible in cities: It would be visible even in cities with moderate light pollution. 

The Andromeda galaxy is currently too far away to be easily seen: 

Distance: It's 2.5 million light years away, or about 25 Milky Way diameters. 

Visibility: Only the super-condensed nucleus of Andromeda is bright enough to be visible to the naked eye. 

Appearance: To the naked eye, the galaxy's disk appears as a fuzzy smudge about one-quarter of a degree wide.
