Bsky pixel artists and gamedevs, help! I'm struggling with how to draw a complex terrain tileset with 1:1 and 2:1 slopes both on floors and ceilings (Super Metroid style). So many special cases to connect! Does anyone know of a placeholder/base tileset I could pixel over?

Here is some footage from N1RA, the Mega Drive/Genesis project I'm co-designing with @bomberlink.bsky.social, who has been working really hard to make my pixels move and feel right. (Just in case Bsky does its thing when compressing the video and caps the framerate, it runs at a smooth 60 fps).

These versions have more color in Megaman's eyes with the same trick of taking advantage of the body sprite underneath, still within NES limitations and palette. I also touched up frame times, making the step frames stay longer to give them a little more oomph while making the midstep shorter.

There is not a single time I post pixel art, and I don't inmediately go: "Wait! I could have...!" So here are 2 improved versions (see post below for the other one!). Black or blue outlines, which one do you prefer? Smoothness or contrast?

Garrote @gabegarey.bsky.social · 01/09/2026

As for the body, it's still limited to 3 colors from the NES palette, but I changed the hues and added shading and highlights. I wonder if it would really work on a CRT or if it would look like shit, though 😅

Garrote @gabegarey.bsky.social · 01/09/2026

Megaman's sprite famously uses a second face sprite on top for more than the usual 3 colors + transparency. I took advantage of transparency so the eyes use the color underneath and squeezed in an extra skin shade, so this probably would still work on NES.

One of the monsters for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis game I'm making with @bomberlink.bsky.social Palette/more shading tones are still subject to change (palette budget is limited, after all!) Floor reflection is just for show, we can't guarantee raytracing running on Genesis (yet!😂)

(Reels)
Ambas opciones están desactivadas en la imagen.

I'm doing the visuals and codesigning this alongside @bomberlink.bsky.social, of Streets of Rage Remake fame (go follow him, or put him in one of those fancy lists for indie devs!) Please, show this post some love if you want to see more!
