Yep, this is just the beginning of Laika’s innovative stop-motion animation and storytelling. 10/10

In fact, while it was their first and so far their only hit in theaters, it’s the film’s 15th anniversary re-release really got more people than it ever had. Heck, I was one of those people as I saw this in theaters during its re-release and in 3D on cherry on top.

State of the art and innovated stop-motion animation, and fun and whimsical characters. Perfectly balanced film with being beautiful and scary at the same time and still holds up after it came almost 2 decades ago.

1. Coraline A marvelous start! Based on the 2002 novella by Neil Gaiman, it tells an engaging story of a girl of the same name that enters the secret door in her new home to an extraordinary world that’s not like any other, along with not being afraid to be dark and scary towards the end….

Well at the very least, it’s better to handle a copyright strike by a greedy company that usually does these things than to sit through that disastrous Felix the Cat movie again.

Then again, critics didn’t gave high praises for something like Robots and Madagascar nor stood out compared to the nominees despite making more money than them.

I was really fascinated about the 2005 nominees for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars since this was the only time(so far) that we don’t have a single computer-animated film nominated in that year.

But regardless, I’m gonna have some good stop-motion stuff prior to the most anticipated film for the rest of 2026.

1. I’m not AniMat 2.0 nor trying to copy his doings except when the toxic cartoon community are up to do some stupid shenanigans. 2. I’m fully aware that the studio don’t have a pretty history to put in nicely, especially with CEO, Travis Knight.

Yep, are you not surprised that I’m doing this? Big reminder though: I’m just gonna share my thoughts on their films only and not the films/nor the studio’s history sans when I’m about to watch Wildwood for two reasons…

This Sunday? Damn, Laika’s not playing around this time.

GabeA113 @gabea113.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Same. Though, I’m glad we got a Disney Animation film in the spring/summer than their usual November/Thanksgiving spot like Zootopia 1, let alone having 2 films in 2016 with the other being Moana.
110
GabeA113 @gabea113.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Then again, Disney Animation released more great films than Pixar’s the decade prior, so maybe they would’ve gone to Zoo instead of Inside Out…I don’t know….but I’m just glad that Zoo 1 came in 2016 and not 2015. Otherwise, we would’ve gotten a big competition with a Disney and a Pixar film.
110
GabeA113 @gabea113.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
If it had come out at Thanksgiving 2015 replacing the Good Dinosaur, then oh boy, there would be competition with another acclaimed Disney film, or should I say, a Pixar film. Inside Out.
110
GabeA113 @gabea113.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Especially a decade ago with the first Zootopia winning almost everything even with another amazing films like Kubo and The Two Strings and Moana.

It’s Hayao Miyazaki! One of animation’s legends. Nearly animation fan must pay respects to him, even if some preferred others like Spider-Verse.

GabeA113 @gabea113.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
And if I remember correctly, The Wild Robot got 4 freakin nominations in the Globes. That’s crazy! Especially for an animated film.

Yeah. People predicted Across and Wild Robot to win, and then, woop, here’s Miyazaki and the independent black cat stealing their thunder!

GabeA113 @gabea113.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Kind of left turn that the Academy votes sometimes went to something that their kids would watch and then the next thing, they vote what THEY watch instead. I mean, there’s Boy and the Heron.

GabeA113 @gabea113.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Anything’s possible. Well, if Wildwood’s a masterpiece, then it’s all over…….. Then again, I know, this is the billionth time I said this, a lot of people expected The Wild Robot to win almost all of the awards, and look how well that went.

GabeA113 @gabea113.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Elio underperformed in theaters, and yet, got nominated. So, I think it could happen with Forgotten Island.

I’ve learned today that Ryan Gosling and Guillermo Del Toro both skipped the 2015 Oscars and went to Disneyland together instead on that day. Interesting.

That’s why Disney is being very careful with Hexed. Maybe it will sadly flop, but they might not lose a ton bc of very little they spent with the marketing. That or it’s because they are gonna over promote Doomsday than they should, even though it had strong pre-sale tickets so far.

Again, original animated films has yet to reach how they were before the pandemic, and it’s going to be while before they get to shine on the big screen again, even if some like Wildwood turns out to be a masterpiece.

GabeA113 @gabea113.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
If I remember correctly, then the original Pixar films had decent marketing, especially Hoppers where they went all out with Tom the Lizard and stuff. And I think Wish had decent marketing prior to becoming a big disappointment.

To be fair, there were many big movies on the same year as Endgame, even though it did end up being the biggest movie of 2019 overall. I mean, Disney had 7 and a half movies crossed over a billion dollars at the box office in one year alone.
110
GabeA113 @gabea113.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
That said, it’s not happening with Doomsday.
110
GabeA113 @gabea113.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
I’m open to having a movie to cross a billion at the domestic box office, especially if the movie itself is amazing, and I’ll be happy if Brand New Day manage to be the first in history by the time it ends its theatrical run, probably not, but I’ll be happy if it happens.
110
GabeA113 @gabea113.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Even if Disney is gonna over promote Doomsday and probably having little-to-no promotion to Hexed, there’s no way Doomsday is gonna be the highest grossing film of 2026. It’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It’s done.

I mean aside from the first two Avatar films and The Force Awakens, December is crowded, but not as crowded as June and July. You know, some families could move out of state to travel for the holiday vacation for their families.

The fact that Coyote Vs. Acme both managed to be somewhat of a box office success after all it went through really is proof that execs do not know anything about what the audience wants from films. And I'm glad it was one because it deserved to be since it was just great.
